Despite a combined eight goals from senior captains Jack Hayden/Apex, NC, Jared Medwar/Apex, NC, and Sean Duffy/Glen Rock, PA, the Hampden-Sydney lacrosse team fell in its 2021 home opener to the nationally-ranked #13 Christopher Newport University Captains, 16-10, on a cold rainy night at Hellmuth-Gibson Field. H-SC got on the board first with at 12:37 in the first quarter with an unassisted goal by Medwar. The Captains answered back just 15 seconds later as part of a four-goal run. The Tigers ended the run with 1:35 left in the first quarter on Hayden's first goal of the night. Duffy brought the Tigers within one goal just 32 seconds into the second quarter. The Captains pulled ahead, 5-3 at the 13:12 mark with both teams trading goals including three H-SC goals. Hayden scored his second and third goals of the night at 11:40 with an assist by Medwar and at 9:19, a man-up goal with an assist from senior Reilly French/Frederick, MD. The Captains led 9-6 at the break. The Tigers pulled back within one on a pair of goals just seven seconds apart at 12:50 and 12:43. French assisted on his second man-up goal of the night when he helped junior Bobby Clagett/Brandywine, MD find the back of the cage first before senior Jake Brummett/Glen Rock, PA won and took the ensuing face-off and scored his first goal of the season. CNU would answer back with a pair of their own goals before Hayden tallied his fourth goal of the contest off a Medwar assist at 7:20 in the third. The Captains started off the fourth period with three goals to take a 16-9 lead. Duffy scored his second goal of the game off a pass from classmate Charlie Doetzer/Holly Springs, NC at 7:22 left. That goal proved to be the final one of the game, as CNU picked up the 16-10 win. Senior William Schlager/Washington, DC took the loss, despite making 10 saves in the first three quarters. Junior Will Perry/Roanoke played the fourth quarter for the second straight game, making three saves. At the face-off, Brummett won 25 of 29 times and improved his season total to 44 of 68 (.647). He also added 20 ground balls on the night, nearly half of the Tigers team total. Six different H-SC players had a caused turnover: Medwar, Duffy, seniors Canevin Wallace/Annapolis, MD and Jake O'Brien/Scituate, MA, junior Grayson Ackaway/Virginia Beach, and sophomore Nick Morgan/Issaquah, WA. H-SC returns to the road on Saturday, March 13 when it visits Randolph College to open Old Dominion Athletic Conference play. The game against the WildCats gets underway at 1 p.m. in Lynchburg.
