PHILADELPHIA - It came down to the final seconds, but big plays by Zoe Belodeau and clutch saves from Mikaila Cheeseman were enough for the 8th-ranked University of Pennsylvania women's lacrosse team to edge 21st-ranked Georgetown on Saturday afternoon, 8-7. The win keeps Penn unbeaten on the year at 6-0. PENN NEWS AND NOTES *Belodeau was the key offensive catalyst for the Quakers, finishing with seven points on the day, including five goals and two assists. *Cheeseman matched her season high with 12 saves on the day, earning her fifth win in goal. *Taylyn Stadler continued the impressive run to her college career, scoring another goal, her ninth of the year. Stadler has scored at least one goal in each game this year. *Entering the game third in the country in assists per game, Gabby Rosenzweig lived up to the hype, assisting on five scores. The junior now has 22 assists this year. *Abby Bosco led the team with four ground balls. *Penn improves to 6-1 all-time against the Hoyas and have won six straight in the series. HOW IT HAPPENED It was Georgetown striking first, gaining the game's first possession and quickly firing a shot from Francesca Whitehurt for a 1-0 lead. In fact, Georgetown would collect the game's first four draw controls, with Cheeseman coming up big with two-straight saves on the ensuing possession to keep the game at 1-0. The Quakers scored on their opening possession, with Belodeau feeding Stadler for the score, and it was Penn again, this time with Rosenzweig feeding Belodeau for a 2-1 lead following a Hoya turnover. A free position save by Cheeseman and ground ball pickup from Katy Junior put the Quakers on the attack again, with Barry scoring on the give-and-go to increase Penn's lead to 3-1. Georgetown would look to Whitehurst again, scoring from distance, despite stout defense from Penn. Penn's first draw control of the afternoon came from Barry, and the Rosenzweig-Belodeau connection came through yet again, with the sophomore tallying another acrobatic finish to make it 4-2 with 16:25 to go. Unfortunately for Penn, that was all its offense could muster in the opening half. The Hoyas were strong in their attack, getting one goal off a rebounded shot and save and another late in the shot clock to even things up at 4-4, before taking the lead with 10:11 remaining in the period on a speedy transition opportunity. The final 10 minutes of play featured lock down defense from each team forcing turnovers, as the Hoyas would hold the slim-advantage at the break. The Quakers quickly wiped away Georgetown's lead less than a minute into the second half as Belodeau fed an open Abby Bosco in front of the goal to even the game, 5-5. Defense would reign supreme for both squads for the next stretch in the game, before the Quakers vaulted themselves on top, 6-5, following a Belodeau goal from Rosenzweig. The lead would be shortlived however, as Georgetown's Whitehurst took the draw and sped straight down to the crease, scoring unassisted just 16 seconds later to even the game yet again, 6-6. The ensuing possession saw Penn notch a save defensively, but get called for a foul just when it thought it gained back the ball. The Hoyas took advantage of the free position opportunity to take a 7-6 lead. The Quakers looked back to Belodeau on offense, and the sophomore tallied another cross-body shot, evening things again at seven. It was both team's defense yet again stepping up, with Penn struggling with turnovers while Cheeseman came up big in the net. After a called timeout by Penn, the Quakers came in clutch with a feed from Rosenzweig to Belodeau with only three seconds remaining on the shot clock to take an 8-7 lead. Penn was able to buckle down defensively and avoid a transition tying opportunity with 10 seconds left on a save from Cheeseman to earn the victory. WHAT'S NEXT? The Quakers will return to the road next week, visiting highly ranked Maryland on Wednesday, March 13 at 5 p.m.
