Lexington, Ky. - Bryce Lowe fired in a game-winning goal with 2:14 remaining in overtime to complete a 9-8 victory for the Transylvania men's lacrosse team over the Elmhurst University Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon at Pat Deacon Stadium. Lowe's scintillating goal on a second-chance opportunity capped off a run of three straight scores by the Pioneers to seize another clutch win for the Pioneers as they moved to 6-2 overall for the 2021 season. The Blue Jays suffered their second defeat of the season to fall to 6-2. The Pioneers began the day pulverizing the Blue Jays' net, scoring half of their regulation goals in the opening quarter on the way to a 4-3 lead. Elmhurst took control of the second quarter, outscoring the Pioneers 3-1 to claim a 6-5 halftime advantage. The third quarter was a defensive masterpiece for both sides, full of physicality and turnovers as the teams went scoreless for the duration of the period. Elmhurst carried the 6-5 lead into the fourth quarter but Transy's Peyton Bray won one of his 14 face-offs on the afternoon and rocketed downfield for the tying goal six seconds into the quarter to tie up the game. But the Blue Jays answered back with two straight scores to take a commanding 8-6 lead midway through the period. The stage was set for the dramatic overtime finish by a corresponding two-goal rally by the Pioneers. Elmhurst's second goal of the quarter with 6:33 remaining would be its last of the match. Transylvania quickly began its rally one minute later with a goal by Kayd Aquino, cutting the deficit in half. With under four minutes remaining, the Pioneers corralled the ball in transition and accelerated downfield as Harry Powers delivered a quick hit to Lowe for the match-tying goal, suddenly forging an 8-8 ballgame. Transylvania would secure the ball once more with two minutes to go and hold possession through the final seconds of the quarter, but could not find the go-ahead goal in regulation. The Blue Jays opened up overtime intent on scoring an early winning goal, but Pioneer goalie Michael Webb came up with a brilliant save to keep the match in play. Following an Elmhurst turnover, the Pioneers moved the ball downfield and Trenton Sneed took a wide shot that bounced high into the stick of Andrew Hamill. The freshman fed Quinn Fox on the left side of the goal and Fox rifled a pass to Lowe, who emerged past the heart of the Elmhurst defense and fired away the game-winner from the right side. Lowe's overtime winner completed a hat-trick for the junior while Hamill added two goals. Bray led the Pioneers with eight ground balls and went 14 of 19 on face-offs. Webb picked up the win in goal with seven saves. The Pioneers were 18 for 22 on clears and outgained the Blue Jays in ground balls, 28 to 24. Transylvania returns to action on Saturday, April 3 at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. Opening face-off between the Pioneers and Tigers is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Edwards-Maurer Field.
