Opening the season on the road for the second consecutive year, the UConn women's lacrosse team fell in its 2019 season opener, 18-6, to No. 13 Syracuse on Friday afternoon at the Carrier Dome. The Huskies (0-1) were led by senior Caitlin Leary and sophomore Abby Vetsch, who scored two goals apiece, while junior Olivia Miles and sophomore Sydney Watson also found the back of the net. Junior Grace Beshlian made five saves in goal, while junior Dayle Lower and sophomore Jacqueline Manno each tallied a team-high two ground balls. The Orange got off to a quick start, scoring the game's first eight goals in the opening 7:51. Watson finally got UConn on the board, converting on a free position shot at 18:48 in the first half. Syracuse tallied the next five goals to take a 12-1 lead into the break. The home team extended its lead to 15-1 about 10 minutes into the second half, but the Huskies responded with three straight goals – two free position, as Leary, Vetsch and Miles each fired shots that crossed the goal line. Leary tallied her second score of the afternoon at 6:55 to bring UConn within 11, 16-5, but Syracuse scored two of the next three goals in the contest to seal the 18-8 win. Up Next… The Huskies will continue its three-game road stint to open the season, traveling 90 minutes up the road to take on the Fairfield stags on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 3:00 p.m.
