TEMPE, Ariz. – The Sun Devil Lacrosse team dropped their Pac-12 opener to No. 22 USC, 15-3, on Friday evening at Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium. Bright spots for the Sun Devils once again included goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau, who recorded her third double-digit save performance this year. Carley Adams and Caryn Takeuchi combined on the Sun Devils' third goal of the night, the first goal and assist of the season for each respectively. The contest wrapped up a five-game homestand to open up the 2019 season. Arizona State would find themselves in an early hole, trailing 10-1 heading into halftime. The team was able to re-group and come out with a different mindset in the second half. The ASU defense held USC to only five goals in the second half and managed to tally two of their own against the Top-25 Trojans. "There were bright spots in both halves, just clearly not enough of them to beat a Top-25 team," Coach Martinez Connor mentioned after the game. Playing on the road was nothing new for USC, who recently returned from a trip to Boston where they narrowly fell to No. 1 Boston College. The Trojans would prove why they continue to move up in the coaches' poll, jumping out to a 9-0 lead midway through the first half. Berkeley Bonneau handled a busy first half extremely well, answering several of the Trojans goals with brilliant saves to keep the deficit from growing. The Sun Devils would get on the board courtesy of a bit of a role reversal. The team leader in goals, Kerri Clayton, dished an excellent pass to the team leader in assists, Emily Glagolev, who cashed in the opportunity with 10:52 remaining. Coming out of the half, Coach Martinez Connor had a message for her team. "I told them we know how to play, we just have to stick to the game plan and things will start to turn around." Increasing the intensity on defense and applying pressure on offense helped Arizona State put together a competitive second half. Kate Dougherty pushed her goal streak to four consecutive games, burying her sixth of the season just under three minutes into the second half. A pair of Sun Devils would team up record their first point of the season, as Carley Adams beat the Trojans goalkeeper off a feed from Caryn Takeuchi. Arizona State Lacrosse hits the road for the first time this season, traveling to Oregon (3/15) before making the trek to Colorado (3/17). The matchup with the Ducks will be available to be streamed live courtesy of the Oregon Digital Stream. The Sun Devils will make their Pac-12 Network debut next Sunday when they take on the No. 23 Colorado Buffaloes in Boulder. There will be plenty of opportunities to see Sun Devil Lacrosse in action throughout the season.
