Florida Southern College men's lacrosse opened its season with a set back to the University of Tampa at Lake Highland Prep in Orlando on Saturday afternoon. The Mocs (0-1) were successful on 14 of 53 total shots, while the Spartans (1-1) converted 17 of 37 total shots. Kyle Silverstein led the Mocs with five goals. Sean Nolan (3) and Joe Appio (2) both had a multi-goal game, while four others found the back of the net. HOW IT HAPPENED • Florida Southern opened the scoring at 14:04 when Silverstein took a feed from Carson Wallace and put it in the back of the net. The Mocs saw their lead evaporate as Tampa rallied off three straight goals in the span of three and half minutes to take a 3-1 lead with 10:47 reamining in the first quarter. Silverstien got one of those goals back as he fired a shot past the Tampa goalie to pull the Mocs within one goal. Tampa added another two goals to push the lead to 5-2. Nolan recorded his first collegiate goal at the 3:16 mark off a feed from Silverstein. • The second quarter saw the Spartans go on a 2-0 run to push its lead to four. Craig Conner took a feed from Nolan to record his first collegiate goal, which wound up being the only FSC goal of the second quarter. Tampa would close out the first half on a 3-0 run, including man up and man down goals by Andrew Kew. • The Mocs would come out of the 10-minute break with goals from Nolan and Skyler Sarkisian to cut the Spartan lead to four. Following a goal by Kew and a penalty on Tampa Silverstein put one in the back of the net for the eighth FSC goal. The Spartans would go on another run as they recorded three unassisted goals to take a 15-8 lead into the final frame. • Both teams would score a pair of goals in the first half of the fourth quarter before the Mocs closed out the game on a 4-0 run. Florida Southern would get goals from Liam Winwood on a feed from Jeff Atlas before three unassisted goals. The Mocs defense limited the Spartans to a game low five shots in the final quarter.
