The No. 9 UIndy men's lacrosse team (10-1, 4-0 GLVC) fended off a late rally by host Montevallo (4-8, 1-3 GLVC) on Saturday afternoon to win, 14-12, and remain perfect in conference action. The Greyhound back line forced 25 turnovers in the win, causing 10 Falcons mishaps. Parker Kump led the team in scoring once again, netting his ninth hat trick of the season. HOW IT HAPPENED It was a slow start offensively for UIndy, who fell behind by a score of 3-1 after more than 12 minutes of action. Kump and Jake Zickel responded with netters within a minute of each other as the teams were tied after the first quarter. The second frame showed to be vastly different than the first, with the Greyhounds outscoring the Falcons, 5-1. Drew Billig scored twice in the quarter, as four Hounds tallied a goal to five the visitors an 8-4 lead at the break. Montevallo came out firing right after halftime, eventually scoring six goals in the frame to match the most allowed in a quarter this season and trail by a pair heading into the fourth. Vitto Cancila and Robbie Berardi took just three seconds to stretch the UIndy advantage to 14-11 in the final quarter before the defense locked in the final 10 minutes and halted any Montevallo chance down the stretch. INSIDE THE BOX SCORE The Greyhounds amassed 61 total shots for the second time this season, and have now reached at least 60 on three separate occasions in 2019. UIndy launched 69 shots in the win over Young Harris back on March 10, while recording 61 against Shorter on March 31. UIndy accumulated 47 ground balls on Saturday, with Josh Jackson leading the team with six. Matthew Johnson and Jack Belobrajdic each scooped up five, while Robbie Berardi also tallied five while going five-of-10 on the faceoff. After breaking his own record of 36 goals in a season this past Wednesday at Lake Erie, Kump becomes the first 40-goal scorer in UIndy history with his ninth hat trick of the 2019 campaign on Saturday. The Surrey, British Columbia product now has 55 points during his senior season. MORE NOTES UIndy won its 10th game of the season on Saturday, matching a program record that was set in 2018 ... Montevallo keeper Kyle Little made 21 saves on 35 shots faced … the Greyhounds committed just two penalties, while the Falcons were called for nine fouls for a total of eight minutes … UIndy lost the faceoff battle for just the second time this season, securing just 13 on 29 attempts. UP NEXT The ninth-ranked Hounds travel to St. Louis, Mo. for a big GLVC battle next Saturday with Maryville at 1 p.m.
