– Pat Spencer scored four goals and had four assists and broke a 38-year old Loyola University Maryland record for career points on Saturday as the ninth-ranked Greyhounds beat the visiting U.S. Naval Academy, 18-5, at Ridley Athletic Complex. With an assist on a Kevin Lindley goal with 35 seconds left in the first half, Spencer tallied his 312th career point, breaking the mark of 311 set by Gary Hanley from 1978-81. He finished the day with 314 points, two away from moving into the top-10 all-time of NCAA Division I career points. Jacob Stover backstopped the Loyola defense with 14 saves, while close defenders John Railey and Cam Wyers each had three caused turnovers. Kevin Lindley posted five goals, while John Duffy added three and an assist. Chase Scanlan had two goals and an assist, while Aidan Olmstead tallied a goal and two assists. Stover keyed the Greyhounds defensively with six first-quarter saves as Loyola (5-2 overall, 2-0 Patriot League) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the opening 15 minutes. He made five more saves in the second as the Greyhounds extended their lead to 9-0 less than six minutes into the frame and 11-2 by the end of the half. Navy had possession for almost the first three minutes of the game, but a Wyers caused turnover started a Greyhounds' transition run that led to the game's first goal. He threw it to Matt Higgins running out of the box, and Higgins fed Ryan McNulty for a high-bouncer at 12:15 that started the 9-0 run. Spencer added the second goal of the game less than three minutes later as he dodged off the left wing, beat his defender and leapt across the crease to dump in an underhand shot. Spencer then assisted on the next two goals, feeding Olmstead and Lindley for goals within eight seconds of each other. Scanlan started a string of unassisted goals with 4:03 left on the first-quarter clock. Duffy then added back-to-back goals with 1:36 to play in the first quarter and 12:54 in the second, making it 7-0 in favor of Loyola. P.J. Brown then scored on the left side, dodging toward goal-line extended before spinning back to his right for a sidearm goal that found the top-right corner at 12:07. Spencer added his second of the game at 9:21 when he dodged from 'X' and shot with virtually no angle to stretch the advantage to 9-0. Michael Foster broke the Navy drought that lasted almost 23 minutes with an unassisted goal at 7:08, but Spencer scored again with 5:45 on the clock for the Greyhounds. Jack Sweeney used a Ryan Wade feed from the right alley to score for Navy (4-3, 2-1) at 3:13, but the Greyhounds would go back up by nine before halftime. Olmstead picked up a ground ball on the sideline to thwart a Navy clear, and he threw it to Spencer at the top corner of the box. Spencer found Lindley running toward the crease, and he scored with 35 seconds left, giving Loyola an 11-2 halftime lead. After the break, Duffy scored 41 seconds into the third quarter for the first of three-straight Loyola goals. Scanlan scored off a Duffy assist, and Olmstead threw to Lindley for a goal at 5:27 to made it 14-2 Loyola. Navy scored back-to-back goals – the only time in the game it did so – with an unassisted Greyson Torain tally at 3:17 in the third and a Wade score off a Foster pass 45 ticks later to make it a 10-goal margin. Spencer, however, scored with 1:43 to play in the third, sparking a 3-0 Greyhounds' run that saw Lindley score twice. Patrick Walsh tallied a Navy goal with 6:53 left, and Peter Swindell scored off a Jack Raba goal with 2:52 left on the clock for the game's last goal. Stover's 14-save performance marked the seventh time in as many games this season that the senior has had 10 or more in a game. Loyola will be back in action on Saturday, March 23, traveling to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, for a 1 p.m. game at Bucknell University.
