DURHAM – Duke scored four of the game's final five goals, but the second-ranked Blue Devils' comeback effort came up just short in a 14-12 setback to Jacksonville University in men's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium. Jacksonville graduate student Max Waldbaum finished his day with four goals and two assists for six points. Jack Dolan chipped in three goals and an assist as the Dolphins built a 13-7 advantage early in the fourth quarter. The first half was a back-and-forth affair with teams trading goals and the lead. The opening 30 minutes alone featured five ties and five lead changes with neither team leading by more than a goal until the final minute of the second stanza. Duke junior Dyson Williams scored three goals, while Brennan O'Neill had two goals and two assists for four points. In goal, Mike Adler matched his season-high in saves with 16. Coming out of the first-quarter break knotted at four apiece, graduate student Nakeie Montgomery took a fabulous feed from O'Neill to give the Blue Devils a 5-4 lead at the 9:26 mark. Just over a minute later, Duke appeared to get the two-goal lead, but the transition score was waved off for offside on the Blue Devils. Jacksonville responded by scoring three unanswered to head into the locker room with a 7-5 lead. The Dolphins stifled Duke's offense in the second quarter, holding the Blue Devils to just seven shots in the frame. Luke Millican made three saves in the period and finished with 10 for the game. Adler was outstanding in the first half for Duke, making 11 saves as Jacksonville fired 24 shots in the two quarters. Waldbaum had four of the Dolphins' seven goals at the break. The momentum continued to swing even further in Jacksonville's favor in the third quarter as the Dolphins scored the first three goals to take a 10-5 lead. Dolan had two of the goals and Waldbaum assisted on the third. Duke's Garrett Leadmon ended the Blue Devils' scoring drought at 19:27 to make it 10-6 and Joe Robertson threw one in with nine seconds remaining in the third quarter to make it an 11-7 contest with 15 minutes to play. The Dolphins, like they had all game, found ways to score and went back ahead by six, 13-7, with 10:44 left in the game. Duke put together a valiant comeback effort with four goals in 4:08, but it was too little too late as the Dolphins came away with the upset victory. Robertson finished with two goals and an assist and Montgomery added two scores. Jordan Ginder handled the faceoff duties for Duke, going 15-of-30 and picking up seven ground balls. Kenny Brower was solid down low on defense with three caused turnovers and four ground balls. The Blue Devils return to action Saturday, Feb. 19 against No. 12 Denver. Faceoff is set for 12 p.m., at Koskinen Stadium.
