The University of Richmond men's lacrosse program faced some adversity Saturday afternoon, finding itself down three goals in the first half, but the Spiders scored nine unanswered goals at one point on their way to a 13-8 Southern Conference victory over Furman at Robins Stadium. The Spiders out-scored the Paladins 9-2 in the second half improving to 2-0 in league play and 5-3 overall. Seven different Spiders scored goals in the victory with sophomore attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) leading the way with three goals, all in a span of 1:44 of the second half. The goals raised Lanchbury's season total to 26 goals through eight games and marked the seventh time this year he has scored at least three goals. He is just seven goals shy of the Richmond single-season scoring mark set by teammate Teddy Hatfield (Summit, N.J.) both in 2017 and 2018 (33). Hatfield had another strong day, dishing out four assists to raise his team-leading total to 18 and his team-leading point total to 37. He is also closing in on the single-season record for assists, trailing that mark by eight helpers for the record he already owns of 26 set in 2016. He holds the Richmond career assists record with 83 helpers, almost more than double the second-most assists in program history. Senior attack Pierce Dellafera (Locust Valley, N.Y.) recorded the first multiple-goal game of his career, posting two goals while getting the start. Both Mitch Savoca (Newtown, Conn.) and Tate Gallagher (Ardmore, Pa.) added a pair of goals each for the Spiders. Senior Patrick Shea (Oakville, Ontario) scored his first of the season while junior Alex Morris (McLean, Va.) added his first career goal. Nick D'Amaro (Manorville, N.Y.) had his best day in the faceoff, winning 16-of-25 while adding a goal and eight ground balls. Junior Sean Menges (Richmond, Va.) and sophomore Jason Reynolds (Chester Springs, Pa.) each added five ground balls while combining for five caused turnovers. Furman (2-6, 0-1 SoCon) came out of the gate quickly, scoring the game's first two goals and opening to a 4-1 lead early in the second quarter when Chad Kreuzer added his second of the game. The Spiders started to claw back and pulled within a couple twice on Savoca and Gallagher goals. Richmond's biggest goal came with 7.8 seconds remaining in the half when Dellafera scored his first to make it a 6-4 deficit at the break, the first of nine-straight Spider goals. Richmond exploded in the third quarter, out-scoring Furman 5-0 in the 15-minute period. Gallagher scored his second at the 9:17 mark to pull within one before Lanchbury added two-straight in a span of 50 seconds to give the Spiders the lead. D'Amaro kept the momentum rolling, scoring 11 seconds after Lanchbury for the 8-6 lead. Lanchbury clinched his hat trick with his third only 43 ticks later for a 9-6 advantage. Richmond kept going with three more to start the fourth and built a 12-6 lead. Savoca and Morris tallied goals just 1:31 apart in the fourth before the Spiders' momentum was most evident at the 8:51 mark when Furman accidently scored an own goal for the Spiders. Sophomore goalkeeper Blake Goodman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) made his first start of the year and tallied 11 saves in the win. Furman's Alec Van de Bovenkamp recorded 17 saves in the loss as the Spiders out-shot the Paladins by a 48-30 margin, including a 23-11 advantage in the second half. The game concluded the Spiders' six-game home stretch as they will only have one home game over the remaining six games of the regular season (April 20). Richmond begins a four-game road trip next Saturday when it travels to Bellarmine for a SoCon game.
