Ryan Tierney had three goals and four assists and the Pride received two-goal games from James Philbin, Justin Sykes, Corey Kale, and Ryan Sheridan as Hofstra snapped a two-game losing streak with a 14-6 victory over Long Island University Saturday afternoon. Hofstra pulled away from LIU in the third quarter when it turned a 6-3 halftime lead to an 11-3 advantage. Hofstra moved to 3-2 with the win while the Sharks fell to 0-4. Tierney opened the scoring at the 3:33 mark of the game with an unassisted tally. After LIU tied the game with 8:19 to play on Will Snelders goal, Tierney found Lutfi for a 2-1 Hofstra lead with 6:56 to go. Kale would put the Pride up by two, 3-1, with his first of the season just 15 seconds later. The teams traded goals to end the quarter with Tierney notching his second of the game to put the Pride on top, 4-2, with 4:00 remaining. The teams combined for three goals in the second quarter with Sykes notching both Hofstra scores, one unassisted and one from Tierney as the Pride led 6-3 at the half. The third quarter belonged to Hofstra as Tierney found Whit Stopak on the doorstep 2:30 in to start the five-goal outburst. Tierney completed his hat trick a minute later before Philbin, Sheridan and Kale scored goals to make it 11-3 after 45 minutes of action. Hofstra did have to weather a brief LIU comeback attempt as the Sharks scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter to make it an 11-6 game with 7:18 to play following a man-up goal from Doug Chase. However, the Pride responded with goals from Kyle Steinbach, Sheridan and Kale down the stretch to end any comeback hopes by the visitors. Brian Herber played a big part in the Hofstra win with a dominant display at the faceoff X. Herber won 21 of 24 faceoffs and had 14 ground balls. Eric Wenz and Michael Altmann led the defense and both long sticks scooped up six ground balls. Bobby Casey made four saves in goal for the Pride to earn the win. Snelders and Chase led LIU with a pair of goals. Ryan Blume had five ground balls. Will Mark tallied nine saves in the loss. Hofstra is back in action next Saturday, March 7, at Ohio State. Game time is set for 12 p.m. It is the first game of three consecutive road games for the Pride. Notes: -Tierney has at least three goals in all five games and his four assists matched his season high. -Hofstra had a 43-24 shot advantage and a 49-19 lead in ground balls. -Hofstra is 16-8 all-time versus LIU but today marked the first meeting since 1990. -Hofstra is 3-1 at Shuart Stadium this season. -Hofstra was a perfect 26-26 on clear attempts. -Today's game marked the first time that Hofstra has played on Leap Day (Feb. 29).
