ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union's men's lacrosse team defeated Muskingum 11-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener Saturday at Mount Union Stadium.
The Purple Raiders got four goals from Alek Kungle (Hartville / Lake) and two each from Logan Addonizio (Wixom, Mich. / Walled Lake Western), Alex Ellison (Uniontown / Lake) and Logan Gebhart (McDonald, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) with a single score from Clay Barkan (Chagrin Falls / Kenston) as they evened their overall record at 1-1.
Muskingum got two goals from Spencer Zecchini and fell to 0-2 overall.
Ellison and Kungle both scored in the first quarter to stake Mount Union out to a 2-0 lead.
Zecchini's first goal halfway through the second quarter cut the Raiders lead to 2-1 but Addonizio, got one of his two assists on the day, as he fed Gebart to push the lead to 3-1 with 5:29 left in the half. Mount Union got two more scores -- a man-up goal from Kungle and an Addonizio score to lead 5-1 at the break.
The Raiders pushed the lead to 8-1 on three goals over the first 8:32 of the third quarter on tallies from Ellison, Kungle and Addonizio. Zecchini scored his second goal at the 3:11 mark and Mount Union led 8-2 heading to the fourth quarter.
Kungle and Gebhart both scored and Mount Union had a 10-2 lead with 6:16 to play. Grant Webster scored for Muskingum and Barkan got the Raiders final goal for the 11-3 final.
The Raiders got on offense thanks to face-off specialist Chris Motter (Hudson), who won 12-of-15 faceoffs while Kyle Reihner (Scranton, Pa. / Scranton Prep) had 10 saves for his first win of the season in goal.
Mount Union remains at home hosting Marietta in an OAC matchup next Saturday, March 13 at 1 p.m. at Mount Union Stadium.
