ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Senior attack Dawson Tait (Ottawa, Ontario/Mother Teresa) scored a game-high six goals to lead the No. 1 RIT (2-0) men's lacrosse team to 19-11 win over No. 12 St. John Fisher College (3-1) under the lights at RIT's Turf Field Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
RIT led 3-0 after the first quarter, extending its lead to 6-0 early in the second quarter on a Matt Wiechers (Waterloo, Ontario/The Kiski School) goal.
St. John Fisher answered with a six-goal run of its own, tying the score at 6-6 on a Jordan DePetres goal with 5:21 remaining in the first half.
The Tigers closed out the second quarter with a four-goal run, including a goal by Ryan Rosenblum (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) with :01 second remaining to give the Tigers a 10-6 halftime lead.
The Tigers ran off five straight goals in the third quarter, extending its lead to 15-7 on a Quinn Commandant (Rockwood, Ontario/The Kiski School) goal with 2:21 remaining.
St. John Fisher scored three straight at the end of the third quarter, cutting the RIT lead to 15-10 on Matt Jeffries goal with :05 seconds to play.
RIT tallied four times in the fourth quarter, while holding the Cardinals to a goal to make it a 19-11 final.
GAME NOTES
Shots were 39-39, while RIT won the ground ball battle 31-23. RIT was 14-of-32 on face-offs, and 2-for-3 on man-up. The Tigers cleared the ball 22-of-23 on attempts.
Tait led RIT with six goals and seven points. Junior Ryan Barnable (Whitby, Ontario/Donald A. Wilson) finished with three goals and three assists, and junior Spencer Bell (Fairport, NY/Fairport) tallied two goals and two assists. Commandant scored twice, while senior Larson Sundown (Basam, NY/Akron) tallied a goal and three assists.
Senior Nick Montemorano (Victor, NY/Victor) won 10 face-offs and had a team-high seven ground balls. Alex Maruna (Medina, OH/St. Ignatius) caused four turnovers and senior Walker Hare (Libertyville, IL/Libertyville) improved to 2-0 in net, making 13 saves.
Nicholas Miller led St. John Fisher with three goals and four points. Jacob Gallina tallied two goals, while Ian Evan finished with a goal and two assists. Darin Eakins took the loss in net for the Cardinals, making nine saves.
