Senior attackman Jack Hennessey scored five goals and added an assist to help lead the No. 13 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team to a 14-8 win over Route 11 rival Clarkson in Liberty League action on Wednesday afternoon. Hennessey led eight other members of the Saints' squad, who got in on the scoring action and also picked up four ground balls. Mark Mahoney finished with two goals and two assists, while Judge Murphy also recorded two goals and added an assist. Alex Mapstone, Chris Jordan, Peter Koch, Ben Murtagh and Ben Hutchinson all added goals for the Scarlet and Brown. Brian Gannon recorded five ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Patrick Abad finished with five grounds balls and two caused turnovers and Zach Prime went 12-for-22 at the faceoff dot. Jordan put the Saints on the board and Hennessey scored back-to-back to give the Saints an early 3-0 lead over the Golden Knights. After trading goals with Clarkson, Matt Reilly and Connor Borchardt scored for the Golden Knights to bring within one with 4:04 to play in the first half. Koch scored his 12th of the season off the pass from Murtagh to give the Saints a 6-4 advantage at halftime. Koch's goal sparked a four-goal run for the Scarlet and Brown and despite three goals from Clarkson, St. Lawrence held an 11-7 lead heading into the final frame. Murtagh, Murphy and Mapstone all scored down the stretch, sealing the win. "It was a good solid effort tonight," said head coach Mike Mahoney '93, P '22, '24. "It was nice to get off to a good start but we knew Clarkson would not go away and they didn't. We were able to get some extra possessions by forcing turnovers on the ride and early in defensive possessions which really benefited us." Bryan Penney and Pierce Currie both tallied two goals and an assist for Clarkson, while four other members of Clarkson's squad each scored once. Matthew Hansen went 12-for-25 at the faceoff dot and recorded a team-best nine ground balls. William Helm made five stops in goal for the Scarlet and Brown, while Matt Yonko made 13 in a relief effort for the Golden Knights. The Saints dominated multiple team stat categories, outshooting the Golden Knights 52-23, including a 27-13 shots on goal advantage. St. Lawrence also recorded 19 caused turnovers to Clarkson's seven and finished with a 46-28 advantage in ground balls. St. Lawrence improved to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in conference play, while Clarkson fell to 3-8 and 1-4. The Saints will host RPI on senior day, this Saturday at 3 p.m. "We are excited to have a full week of lacrosse and especially to be at home for this stretch of games," Mahoney added.
