The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team started off its season in the win column with an 18-13 victory over the Ithaca College Bombers at the Pinnacle Athletic Campus Saturday. The Cardinals, ranked 14th in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Coaches Division III Poll, were led by sophomore Ian Evans who scored a career-high six goals on the day. All-American face off specialist Joe Post had a stellar season debut, winning 27 of 33 draws while also tallying two goals and two assists. Tucker O'Donnell and Jack Mulvihill each earned a hat trick for Fisher. The Bombers got on the scoreboard first in the opening minute but the Cardinals took control from there with eight straight scores. Jordan Depetres set up Nicholas Miller for Fisher's first goal of the season then freshman Samuel Miller netted his first career goal to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead as Fisher led for rest of the game. Mulvihill and Evans each buried two goals during the early run. After Ithaca scored three-straight to cut the lead to 8-4 in the second quarter, Evans hit the hat trick mark by coming out from behind the net and beating the Bombers net minder. Ithaca finished out the half with three more scores to make it a two-goal game. The Cardinals responded well coming out of the break with Mulvihill setting up Tucker O'Donnell in the opening minute to make it 10-7 in favor of Fisher. Ithaca made it as close as one goal game at 10-9, however, the Cardinals surged ahead with a 4-0 run. Evans scored back-to-back goals and then O'Donnell reached a new career-high with his third score of the game. Post then won the following face off, stormed down the field, and found the back of the net. Evans reached the six-goal mark before the end of the third quarter as the Cardinals held a 15-11 advantage heading into the fourth. Things slowed down to for early portion of the final frame until Ithaca scored and then Depetres answered with his lone goal of the day. Post followed it up with another scoop and score off the face off to give Fisher a five-goal edge with eight minutes to play. Mulvihill would score the final goal for Fisher on the man-up advantage as the Cardinals held the Bombers to only one tally in the final minutes to seal the win. In its first meeting since Head Coach Dave Dobbins took over leading the program, Fisher picked up its first win over Ithaca since 2010. Post picked up a game-high 19 ground balls for the Cardinals. Senior Darin Eakins made six saves over 60 minutes played in net. The Cardinals now prepare for their first game at Growney Stadium on Tuesday as they host Denison University for 4 p.m. face off.
