The Hampden-Sydney College lacrosse team scored seven goals in the second half to come from behind and pick up the 11-9 win over Catholic (0-3) from Hellmuth-Gibson Field Wednesday night. The Tigers (2-0) got five points from junior Jared Medwar/Apex, N.C. (2 goals, 3 assists) and four from senior Jack Hayden/Apex, N.C. (3 goals, 1 assist) in the victory. Joey Rockovich scored a pair of goals for the Cardinals.
Catholic scored the first goal of the game at 12:23 in the first quarter, with Rockovich scoring unassisted. The Tigers answered back with sophomore Bobby Clagett/Brandywine, Md. scoring at 9:54 and junior Jake O'Brien/Scituate, Mass. scoring at 8:15. Medwar assisted on both Clagett's and O'Brien's goals. The Cardinals retook the lead with two goals at 3:39 and 1:32. Medwar scored his first goal of the game with seven seconds left in the first quarter, unassisted, to even the game up at 3-3 after one period.
To start the second quarter, Catholic used a trio of goals to push their lead to 6-3, including two man-up goals. O'Brien scored at 6:02 to pull the H-SC back within two, but a Cardinal goal just 14 seconds later pushed the visitors' lead to 7-4 going into the half.
Junior Charlie Doetzer/Holly Springs, N.C. scored at 11:56 in the third quarter with Hayden assisting. Catholic answered back at 7:52 with their third man-up goal of the game, however, the Tigers scored five unanswered goals to take the lead. Doetzer took a pass from Medwar and found the back of the net at 3:53. After junior Jake Brummett/Glen Rock, Pa. secured the faceoff, O'Brien scored his second goal of the contest at 3:39, unassisted, to conclude scoring in the third quarter.
Medwar scored his third goal of the game at 13:39 in the fourth quarter, unassisted, to even the score with Catholic at 8-8. Hayden gave the Tigers the lead for good at 12:27 off an assist from sophomore Presley Miller/Annapolis, Md. Senior Garrett Patnesky/Raleigh, N.C. finished the scoring run by H-SC at 11:07, unassisted. After the Cardinals pulled within one at 10-9 at 7:14, Clagett added an insurance goal with 1:07 left he game, as the Tigers held on for the 11-9 win.
Senior Nick Arcuri/Apex, N.C. played all 60 minutes in goal for the Tigers, picking up the win, yielding nine goals, making 16 saves. Brummett went 17 for 23 in faceoffs (73.9%) for H-SC, adding a game-high 12 ground balls as the Tigers took a 34-26 advantage.
In addition to the ground balls, H-SC led in saves (16-13) and faceoffs won (17-6). Junior Canevin Wallace/Annapolis, Md. led the Tigers with three caused turnovers.
H-SC travels to Jennings Family Stadium on the campus of #20 Christopher Newport on Saturday, February 22 for a non-conference matchup at 6 p.m.
