Junior Logan Morin led the Bears with three goals in the season opener for Coast Guard men's lacrosse as they defeated Elizabethtown, 10-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Bears start the season 1-0, while the Blue Jays drop 0-1. Senior Benner Geurtsen and sophomore Will Iorio both scored two goals a piece for the Bears. Sophomore Conor Rowan, and seniors Ian Logan and Colin Cashin all added a goal each to round out scoring for the Bears. Justin Edwards and Cashin both had four ground balls. Mike Scrafano scored the lone goal for the Blue Jays with help from Ben Hiltebeitel. Jeff Bloom had a team-hgh three ground balls. Coast Guard scored the first five goals of the game to hold a 5-0 advantage in just the first period. Logan put the Bears on the board first at 11:22 when he fired his shot with help from Matty Johnson. Colin Cashin answered next for the Bears at 10:57 to hold a 2-0 lead. Iorio extended the Bears lead to 3-0 when he received a pass from Ryan Gochar and finished to beat the Blue Jays senior goalie Jack Myers. Geurtsen tallied his first of the game at 3:55 with an unassisted shot as the Bears held a 5-0 lead. Elizabethtown scored their lone goal at 8:08 on a man-up opportunity as Hiltebeitel found Scrafano to get the Blue Jays on the board. Morin answered for the Bears, as he scored at 3:23 to give Coast Guard a 6-1 advantage heading into halftime. The Bears scored two goals in each of the two periods to give them the 10-1 final. Coast Guard outshot Elizabethtown 41-24 and held the advantage in ground balls 29-19. Senior goalie Trey Johnson finished the game with 13 saves to earn his first victory of the season. Myers finished with two saves in the first period for the Blue Jays and drops to 0-1, before Tom Mahoney came in for relief with eight saves. The Bears will be back in action on Wednesday February 27 when they host RPI at 6:00 PM.
