CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland men's lacrosse team scored six consecutive goals to open the fourth quarter to overcome a four-goal deficit and held on for a 14-13 come-from-behind victory Friday afternoon in SUNYAC West action in raw and rainy conditions at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference. The Knights fell to 2-3 and 2-1. Junior Pat Doyen (Miller Place) tallied a team-high six points on four goals and two assists to lead the Red Dragons. Freshman Colton Smith (Naples/Penn Yan Academy) scored three goals and added an assist, and senior Brandon Stiles (Mastic/Eastport-South Manor) also netted three goals. Senior Zak Jones (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach) recorded two goals and three assists, junior Dante Yacavone (Homer) contributed one goal and two assists and sophomore Connor Leonard (Syracuse/Henninger) notched a goal. Junior Marc Esposito (West Babylon) started in goal for the Red Dragons but was lifted for senior Charlie Ricottoni (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills West) in the second quarter. Ricottoni made one save over 20:44 before Esposito returned late in the third quarter to finish the game, ending with six saves. Senior Brian Williams (Holtsville/Sachem East) won 24-of-31 faceoffs and collected 19 ground balls, one off his career high. Senior Brandon Croteau (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) scooped up six ground balls, while Yacavone recorded four ground balls. Senior Tim Fallo (Mohegan Lake/Lakeland) totaled a game-high nine points on three goals and six assists for the Knights. Senior James Pratt (East Fishkill/John Jay) and junior Kevin Cook (Northport) finished with three goals and one assist apiece. Senior Connor Griffin (Lake Grove/Sachem North) tallied one goal and one assist, and junior Liam Thompson (Kings Park) and sophomores William McCumiskey (Oyster Bay/Chaminade) and Brady Sullivan (Garden City) each added a goal. Senior goalie Bernard Tomaszewski (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) registered seven saves. Freshman Trevor Bollinger (Ithaca) secured four ground balls and caused five turnovers. Pratt added four ground balls, and Fallo and Cook each grabbed three ground balls. The game featured multiple scoring runs and momentum swings. The Knights built a 4-1 lead after the opening quarter as four different players scored. Cortland scored three of the first five goals of the second quarter, one each from Stiles, Jones and Doyen, to pull to within 6-4, but Cook made it a 7-4 game with his goal seven seconds before the half. The Red Dragons opened the third quarter with quick goals from Yacavone, Smith and Doyen to tie the game at 7-7 at the 11:26 mark. Geneseo responded by outscoring Cortland, 5-1, to close the quarter with a 12-8 lead. The Red Dragons then mounted their fourth-quarter comeback. Stiles scored at 11:49, followed by Leonard's goal at 10:42 and Doyen's goal at 9:30. Smith followed with back-to-back goals at 7:20 and 4:22 to give Cortland its first lead of the game at 13-12. Doyen put Cortland up, 14-12, with his fourth goal of the game at the 2:04 mark. After a Geneseo timeout, the Knights won the ensuing faceoff and pulled to within 14-13 on Cook's goal with 1:11 remaining. Williams secured the next faceoff, but the Red Dragons turned the ball over with 45 seconds on the clock. After a successful clear, Pratt managed a shot with 12 seconds left that Esposito denied. Pratt recovered the ground ball, which led to a slashing penalty on the Red Dragons with 1.5 seconds on the clock. Following a Cortland timeout, Cook fired a shot from the right side that sailed wide where Esposito picked it out of the air to seal the win.
