RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- In a back and forth affair early on, the Trine University Thunder stalled Concordia-Chicago's second half offense and pulled off the 16-8 opening day victory. Inside the Box Score: Today's game proved to be a physical match up, with 22 penalties between both teams, accumulating to 26 minutes worth of penalty time. Junior Jack Liskey stopped 20 shots today and faced 36 shots on goal. Dating back to last season, Liskey is now on a two-game streak of picking up double-digit saves. CUC had six different goal scorers today, of which Gabriel Balcaen, Chadd Rowe, and Dylan Mordhorst recorded the firsts of their careers. Balcaen, in his first collegiate game, recorded a hat trick and earn two of his three scores on man up opportunities. Sophomore Boston Dumas dished three assists and won 16-of-25 face offs. He also picked up 16 ground balls. How it Happened: The Thunder were the first to get on the scoreboard today, as Trine rattled off two early goals to establish a 2-0 lead. It did not take long for the Cougars to gain momentum however, as they cut the deficit in half with five minutes to go in the first, thanks to Balcaen's first goal of the day. Down 3-1 with two minutes left in the first, Dumas found the back of the net out of the face off and kept the game at bay. The Thunder would hit one more goal before the second quarter began, to take a 4-2 lead. Two minutes into the second, Dumas found Benjamin Lang on the right wing, as Lang was able to convert and make it a 4-3 game. Now down 7-3, the Cougars found themselves man-down, but Dumas once again found a teammate and this time Brett Krueger was able to find the back of the net. With seven minutes to go in the half, CUC trailed by just three. However, from there, the Thunder would ice Concordia's offense for nearly 32 minutes of play to establish a 16-4 lead well into the fourth quarter. Down by 12 with six minutes remaining, the Cougars found their offense re-energized, as they allowed the Thunder to score just one fourth quarter goal and scored four goals of their own. Despite the late surge, Trine's strong third quarter allowed them to take home the 16-4 victory. Up Next: CUC returns tothe field this Thursday, to take on Alma College at 1 p.m. inside Concordia Stadium.
