BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's lacrosse team outscored Holy Cross 4-0 in the first quarter and wouldn't look back, downing the Crusaders, 17-7, on Sunday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Junior Christian Mule' posted season highs in goals (5) and points (6) while senior Tommy Schelling had a goal and career-high six assists to lead the offense. Defensively, graduate student Teddy Leggett recorded six groundballs and five caused turnovers, moving from fifth into a tie for second in program history in career caused turnovers. Leggett began Sunday with 68-career caused turnovers, passing Mike Noone (71) and tying Eddie Bouhall (73) when all was said and done. "I thought today was a great team win," said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. "We've been talking the last couple weeks about trying to put together defense and offense, having strong efforts at the same time. I feel like our first two games, we'd have the defense show up, we'd have the offense show up, but not necessarily together. I thought the Navy game, we saw a little bit of that, but today, we took another step in that direction." Along with Mule' and Schelling, sophomore Quinn Armstrong scored three times for his third-career hat trick and junior Andrew Mapstone scored a career-high two goals. Senior Matt Marker also had his first-career multi-goal game, finishing with two goals and an assist. Senior Cole Kirst had a goal and two assists. "Offensively, we did a great job sharing the ball," said Cassese. "If you look at our starting attack, we had nine assists with our starting attack and that's pretty impressive. Our second midfield stepped up in a big way… six goals from our second midfield today. I just thought overall, we shared the ball really well on offense and we played really unselfish lacrosse on that side." The Mountain Hawks caused 14 of Holy Cross' 19 turnovers. Along with Leggett's five, nine others recorded one caused turnover apiece, including starting close defensemen – seniors Michael Gomez and Anthony Tangredi. As a team, Lehigh posted a season-high 55 groundballs. "I thought defensively, we did a nice job and settled in," said Cassese. "Holy Cross is a very good offensive team. They definitely challenged us in a few ways. We were able to vary what we were doing back there. We were able to create a bunch of turnovers for sure and pick the ball up first time on defense and get the ball upfield." Marker scored both of his goals in the first quarter, giving Lehigh a 1-0 then later 4-0 lead after 15 minutes of play. Lehigh held Holy Cross scoreless for the game's first 16:39, but the Mountain Hawks answered with four of the next five goals – the final two in that stretch coming off the stick of Mule' (both assisted by Schelling). The last gave Lehigh an 8-2 lead midway through the second quarter. The Crusaders answered with two Dean DiNanno goals in less than a minute, but answers from Armstrong and first year Dakota Eierman gave Lehigh a 10-4 lead, on the way to the 10-5 halftime advantage.
