The Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team got goals from nine different players, held visiting Towson to just two goals in the first 35 minutes and used a 13-save performance from senior Brock Turnbaugh to fuel a 14-6 win over the 14th-ranked Tigers in the season opener for both teams at Homewood Field Saturday night. The 11th-ranked Blue Jays won their 11th straight season opener and improve to 16-2 under head coach Dave Pietramala in openers. The Blue Jays spent the entire 2017 season without the services of junior defenseman Patrick Foley. It took Foley less than two minutes to make his presence felt as he scored in transition just 1:54 into the game to give Hopkins a lead it would never relinquish. By the time the Tigers got on the board at the 12:29 mark of the second quarter, five different Blue Jays had found the back of the net, including seniors Patrick Fraser and Joel Tinney, who fired home extra-man goals exactly 100 seconds apart midway through the opening period to turn the early 1-0 lead into a three-goal margin. An unassisted strike from junior Alex Concannon and a transition goal from junior Robert Kuhn in the final 4:46 of the opening frame gave the Blue Jays a 5-0 lead at the end of one. The teams split the opening four goals of the second quarter to make it 7-2 after a Chad Patterson strike for Towson with 6:51 remaining in the first half, but junior Kyle Marr scored three times in a span of less than four minutes to push the lead to 10-2 and senior Hunter Moreland scored off the faceoff following the third of those three Marr goals to account for an 11-2 halftime score. The Blue Jays pushed the lead to a game-high 10 just 91 seconds into the third quarter as Concannon took a feed from senior Shack Stanwick and ripped a 10-yarder on the run past Towson goalie Josh Miller. Towson was within eight late in the third quarter after Brendan Sunday and Jean-Luc Chetner scored back-to-back goals, but sophomore Cole Williams and Stanwick sandwiched goals around a Grant Maloof tally late in the fourth quarter before Johnny Giuffreda closed the scoring for Towson in the final minute. Turnbaugh's 13 saves are tied for the second highest total of his career and he posted five of his 13 saves in the second quarter when the Blue Jays essentially put the game away. Marr paced the Blue Jay offense with four goals and two assists, while Tinney (2g, 2a), Concannon (2g, 1a) and Stanwick (1g, 2a) all had multi-point games to their credit. Jon Mazza paced the Tigers with one goal and one assist and junior Alex Woodall won 16-of-24 faceoffs and added five ground balls, but a Towson defense that had allowed just 7.65 goals per game in 2017 surrendered its highest goal total since Johns Hopkins scored 14 in a 14-8 victory over TU on March 12, 2016. The Tigers allowed more than 11 goals just once in 2017 and never allowed more than 12. Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, February 17 when the Blue Jays travel up Charles Street to take on Loyola Maryland. Faceoff is set for 1 pm.
