Score: Kennesaw State 13, Vanderbilt 20 Records: Kennesaw State (1-3, 0-0), Vanderbilt (5-2, 0-0) Key Players: Siena Gore (5 goals, 7 DCs, 2 GBs, 2 CTs), Marissa Gore (3 goals, 2 assts, 5 DCs, 1 CT, 1 GB), Jaxsyn Schonewille (2 goals), Caroline Farley (1 goal, 4 DCs, 1 GB), Julia Weiss (9 saves, 6 GBs), Carson Pearson (3 CTs, 2 GBs), Julia Dell'Angelo (1 goal, 1 GB) and Natalie Welch (1 goal, 1 GB). THE STORYLINE The Kennesaw State women's lacrosse team got hot in the second half to give Vanderbilt a scare but could not overcome the first half deficit and complete the comeback falling to the Commodores 20-13 Wednesday afternoon in Nashville. MANESS QUOTES On the second half fight… "I'm happy with how we came out in the second half. I thought our girls adjusted well. We adjusted our shot selection on offense and adjusted our draws unit. Our defense had another record day with caused turnovers. Our team showed the fight they have to battle back and I expect this fight to carry into the next game." HOW IT HAPPENED The Commodores took charge early, working through the Owls' defense to net the opening goal four minutes in. Vanderbilt added three more goals before Siena Gore finally put one on the board for KSU to make it 4-1 at the 17:40 mark. After another 3-0 run for the Commodores, Siena Gore scored once again as the two teams proceeded to traded goals over the next few minutes. Both Natalie Welch and Jaxsyn Schonewille found the back of the net as Vanderbilt held on to a 10-4 lead with five minutes left in the period. The Commodores recorded one more goal before the halftime whistle to take an 11-4 into the locker room. Vanderbilt logged 11 draw controls in the period compared to five for the Owls as Julia Weiss recorded six saves in the first half. Vanderbilt came out firing to open the second half with two goals less than 30 seconds apart, but Marissa Gore settled it down with her first of the day to make it 13-5 two minutes in. KSU eventually cut the Vanderbilt lead in half, 14-7, thanks to back-to-back goals from Marissa Gore and Caroline Farley, the first of her career. The Commodores responded with three of the next four goals to extend their lead to 17-8 at the 21:32 mark. KSU brought the heat midway through the half with two goals by Siena Gore sandwiched around a goal from Julia Dell'Angelo to cut the lead to 17-11. After a goal by Vanderbilt, the Gore sisters continued to chip away at the lead with a goal apiece to trail by five, 18-13, with 5:52 to play. The comeback attempt ended there, however, as Vanderbilt logged two more goals in the final minutes before the game came to an end. NOTES - Siena Gore netted five or more goals for the 16th time in her career. - Jaxsyn Schonewille recorded a career-high two goals. - Marissa Gore finished with five points (3 goals, 2 assists) to mark just the fourth time in her career she has logged five or more points. - Sophomore Natalie Welch netted a goal for the third straight game. - After being out-drawn 11-5 in the first half, the Owls recorded 11 draw controls to VU's eight in the second period. - Caroline Farley was a big factor in the center circle recording a career-high four draw controls, all in the second half. - KSU caused double-digit turnovers for the third time this year as Carson Pearson led the way with a career-high three. - The Owls scooped up a season-high 23 ground balls with Julia Weiss recording a career-high six. UP NEXT The Owls return to Kennesaw for their first conference game of the season taking on Stetson next Monday (Mar. 15) at 12 p.m.
