Junior attackman Kyle Marr ignited a seven-goal game-ending run for the Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team by scoring three straight himself in a span of just over four minutes to power the Blue Jays past visiting Delaware, 14-8, at Homewood Field Saturday afternoon. Johns Hopkins runs its winning streak to four games with the victory, while the Blue Hens dropped their fourth straight after opening the season at 3-0. In a game of short runs through the first three quarters, it was Delaware grabbing an 8-7 lead on a Bryce Reid goal with 1:03 left in the third period when he scored into an open net after a failed Blue Jay clear. That would be the last goal of the day for the Blue Hens, who couldn't overcome a decided possession advantage for Johns Hopkins on the strength of the play of Blue Jays senior Hunter Moreland. Marr sent the game to the fourth quarter even at 8-8 as he took a feed from senior Shack Stanwick and scored from a tough angle to force the sixth and final tie of the game. Less than five minutes into the final period the Blue Jays had their first two-goal lead of the game as Marr added his second and third goals of the game - the first off a quick feed to the slot from Stanwick and the second after senior Thomas Guida swept across the top of the top and found Marr on the wing; Marr went low to high just under the crossbar on the third of his three strikes with 10:54 remaining in regulation. The two-goal lead was doubled just over two minutes later as freshman Brett Baskin scored from in tight and Guida bounced one home from 12 yards out to make it 12-8 with 8:35 left. A right-handed rip from senior Pat Fraser and the second goal of the day for sophomore Cole Williams closed out the scoring for the Blue Jays. It was Delaware that came out strong early on as a game-opening goal by Blue Jay senior Brinton Valis was answered by a four-goal run for the `Hens that covered a span of more than nine minutes bridging the first and second quarters. An unassisted Charlie Kitchen goal jump-started the spree for Delaware, which added an extra-man tally from Joe Eisele and a 12-yard bouncer from Jackson Finigan in the final seconds of the first quarter to make it 3-1 Delaware after the first 15 minutes. When Reid scored the first of his two goals just 2:25 into the second quarter, the Blue Hens had their three-goal lead and the Blue Jays had gone more than 13 minutes without scoring. The Blue Jay scoring drought was over quickly as senior Joel Tinney scored off an ally dodge 32 seconds after Reid's goal and Williams took a slick feed from Tinney 10 seconds later and scored from the doorstep to make it 4-3. The one-goal deficit was a one-goal lead just over two minutes later as Stanwick and Guida went back-to-back in a 38-second span to give the Blue Jays a 5-4 lead. That lead held through halftime as neither team found the back of the net in the final nine minutes of the second quarter. Delaware scored four of the first six goals of the second half to grab the 8-7 lead late in the third period on Reid's second goal of the game, but Moreland was busy giving the Blue Jays a decided advantage in possession as he won 6-of-8 faceoffs in the third quarter and the first six of the fourth the Blue Hen defense, which had withstood the possession disparity for 45 minutes, finally broke early in the fourth as Marr ignited the game-ending seven-goal run. Stanwick led the Blue Jays offensively as totaled two goals and a career-high-tying five assists to match his personal best with seven points. Marr (3g, 2a), Guida (2g, 1a), Tinney (2g, 1a) and Williams (2g, 1a) all totaled at least three points for the Blue Jays, who have scored 61 goals during their four-game winning streak. Moreland finished his day with a 20-of-25 performance at the X and his 12 ground balls are the second-highest total of his career. Kitchen, Eisele and Reid all finished with two goals for the Blue Hens, but Delaware was outshot 50-35 (including 35-14 in the second half) and lost the ground ball battle 27-17. The loss offset a solid effort by Blue Hen goalie Matt DeLuca, who posted 13 saves, including seven in the third quarter. Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, March 24 when the Blue Jays travel to Virginia. Faceoff in Charlottesville against the Cavaliers is set for 11:30 am and the teams will battle once again for the Doyle Smith Cup.
