- The Johns Hopkins-Maryland men's lacrosse series, which dates back to 1895, had seen virtually everything in the first 115 meetings before Saturday's latest version of the rivalry. You can now add a triple overtime game to the series records as the Terps outlasted the host Blue Jays, 8-7, before an overflow crowd of 10,388 on a Will Snider goal 50 seconds into the third extra session. Snider, whose game-winner came off a skip pass from Logan Wisnauskas, had forced extra time with a wicked low-to-high rip from 10 yards out with 2:36 remaining in the fourth quarter; that strike came just 56 seconds after Jared Bernhardt found Wisnauskas alone on the back side and Wisnauskas scored into an open net from five yards out to start Maryland's game-ending three-goal run. Johns Hopkins (9-4, 3-2 B1G) had rallied from a 3-2 halftime deficit to grab a 7-5 lead as the Blue Jays outscored the Terrapins 5-2 in the first 21:09 of the second half. A strike from freshman Connor DeSimone just 57 seconds into the third quarter jump-started the spree for the Blue Jays, who took a 4-3 lead less than two minutes later when sophomore Alex Concannon shook his defender 12 yards out in the middle of the field and beat Maryland goalie Dan Morris low to the stick side. The Terps (11-2, 4-1 B1G) pulled even twice in the final nine minutes of the third period as Wisnauskas and Tim Rotanz wrapped goals around an extra-man tally from Blue Jay senior Joel Tinney in the final 9:21 of the period to account for a 5-5 tie at the end of three quarters. Another goal from Concannon - this one on a right-hander on the run that beat Morris low - just 2:03 into the fourth quarter gave the Blue Jays a 6-5 lead and junior Kyle Marr dodged from behind the goal and got top-side on his defender six yards in front of the cage to give the Blue Jays the 7-5 lead with 9:51 on the clock. Johns Hopkins had a golden opportunity to push the lead to 8-5, but Morris stopped Tinney from the slot and Wisnauskas jump started Maryland's game-ending spree to cap an extended Maryland possession a short time later. A low-scoring first-half saw the Blue Jays score twice in the first 3:21 to grab an early 2-1 lead. Tinney and senior Shack Stanwick sandwiched goals around a Justin Shockey strike to account for the quick start. Shockey's goal came just six seconds after Tinney's game-opening goal and Stanwick stuffed one home less than two minutes later off a feed from sophomore Cole Williams. Maryland drew even on the first of Rotanz's two goals midway through the first quarter and the Terps grabbed their first lead of the game with 61 seconds left in the first half on the first of Wisnauskas' three goals. The 3-2 Maryland lead held for just 57 seconds in the third quarter before DeSimone drew the Blue Jays even. Hopkins wouldn't trail and Maryland didn't lead again until Snider's goal 50 seconds into the third overtime ended the longest game in series history. Wisnauskas paced the Terrapins with three goals and one assist and Rotanz added two goals and one assist. The Blue Jay defense held Maryland's top two scorer's - senior Connor Kelly and Bernhardt - to a combined two assists and 0-for-24 shooting. Morris totaled 13 saves in goal for Maryland. Tinney and Concannon had the two goals for Johns Hopkins, while Stanwick and Marr added one goal and one assist. Desipte the loss, Johns Hopkins earned the number two seeded in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament. The Blue Jays will play Ohio State in the semifinals on Thursday, May 3 at Michigan. Maryland claimed its fourth consecutive Big Ten regular season crown and earned the top seed in the tournament - the Terps will play fourth-seeded Rutgers in the Big Ten semifinals. The Johns Hopkins-Ohio State game will be the second semifinal and will start at 7:30 pm. All games in the Big Ten Tournament will air on the Big Ten Network. Notes: Marr two's points push him past 100 for his career (101) • Only one previous Hopkins-Maryland game had even gone to two overtimes - the 1973 national championship game • Maryland had scored at least 10 goals in every game this season before today.
