The University of Albany answered Drexel's five-goal run with two goals midway through the fourth quarter to edge Drexel, 13-12, at Vidas Field on Saturday. Reid Bowering and Collin Mailman each scored twice for the Dragons (1-2), who have now played three straight one-goal games to start the year. Jakob Patterson scored five goals and had an assist for Albany, who improved to 1-1. Albany scored four straight goals midway through the third quarter to take an 11-7 lead. Patterson scored the first two for the Great Danes, and just 71 seconds later Tehoka Nanticoke made it a three-goal game. Patterson then set up Davis Diamond to give Albany what looked like a commanding four-goal lead. The Dragons answered with a run of their own. Drexel scored five straight times to take the lead at 12-11. Freshman Jack Mulcahy started the scoring with four minutes to play in the third. Reid Bowering, Collin Mailman and Matthew Varian added goals all within 1:37 of each other to even the game up after three. Mailman capped his second straight hat trick with 9:37 to play in the game. Drexel had a chance to take control of the game a minute later. With a flag down on the field, the Dragons' Bowering dodged past his defender on the wing and broke in alone. His shot from the top of the crease hit the post, keeping the lead at one. The Dragons could not convert on the man-up and Albany tied it at the 8:02 mark on Jakob Patterson's fifth goal of the game. The Great Danes scored what proved to be the game-winner at the 5:46 mark when Ron John set up Davis Diamond for his fourth goal of the game. Drexel had its chances to tie after goalkeeper John Roulston made a key save on Kyle Casey with 2:07 to go. The Dragons had three shots in the final minute, including one from Marshal King with just five seconds to go, but Nate Siekierski came up with the save for Albany and the Great Danes escaped with the win. Bowering and Mailman each picked up three goals in the loss. Bowering now has 13 goals in the Dragons' three games in 2019. Mulchay added two, including one on the man-down. Each team picked up a man-down goal in the game. Roulston, in his first start of the year, made a career-high 14 saves. Jimmeh Koita performed well at the face-off "x". The junior won 19 draws and had 10 ground balls. Patterson led everyone with six points. Diamond scored four times, while John picked up a goal and two assists. Siekierski played well in the cage, coming up with 14 stops, nine of them coming in the second half. Drexel will play at Jacksonville next Saturday.
