Facing a three-goal deficit at halftime, No. 2/2 Syracuse (5-0, 3-0) outscored No. 4/4 Notre Dame (2-2, 0-2) 11-5 over the remainder of the contest as it secured a 15-12 victory in the Carrier Dome on Sunday afternoon. Six unanswered goals, including two apiece from Megan Carney and Emma Tyrrell, to start the second half powered the 'Cuse ahead en route to the Orange's fifth-straight victory to open the season. "I think that we made good adjustments on both ends of the field to start the second half," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "We were way more active on the offensive end and the defense going into a pressure zone really helped us and allowed us to have a much better second half." Meaghan Tyrell led the Orange on offense with six points (3G, 3A), while Carney tallied a team-best four goals. Emma Tyrrell posted career-highs in both goals (3) and points (4). Sierra Cockerille dished out four assists on the game, doubling her previous career standard. HOW IT HAPPENED The Fighting Irish got off to a fiery start to open the contest, outscoring the Orange 7-2 over a 25-minute span that featured a pair of goals for both Madison Ahern and Samantha Lynch. It marked the first time the 'Cuse has trailed this season. Down five, Syracuse answered back with tallies from Meaghan Tyrrell and Emma Tyrrell to close the opening frame down 7-4. The Orange offense erupted out of the break, scoring the first six goals to open the second stanza. Emma Tyrrell tallied the third goal in the stretch to even the teams at seven and a score from Carney put Syracuse ahead, 8-7, with 26:53 remaining in the contest. Across the first 15 minutes of the second half, the Orange advantage grew to as many as five goals, with Syracuse outscoring Notre Dame 10-2 during the stretch. The Irish tallied three of the final four goals during the contest, but the deficit proved insurmountable as Syracuse secured a 15-12 victory. OF NOTE Syracuse's 5-0 start is its best record to open a season since the Orange also won their first five contests to kick off the 2017 season. The Orange led the Irish in assists by a 12-3 margin. Coming into the contest Syracuse led the nation in assists per game (8.75). Syracuse bested Notre Dame in both shots (38-23) and shots on goal (29-23). The Orange secured 22 draw controls to the Irish's seven. Katelyn Mashewske recorded a career-best 13 draw controls, breaking her previous career high (12) set on Thursday against Notre Dame. Her 13 draw controls are the fourth-most in a game by a Syracuse player in program history and the most in a game by a Syracuse player since Morgan Widner posted 14 draw controls against Canisius on April 18, 2017. Kerry Defliese tied her career high with five ground balls. The graduate defender previously reached the mark against Canisius on February 7, 2020. Asa Goldstock finished with 11 saves, marking the third game she has stopped more than 10 shots. UP NEXT Syracuse continues conference play against Virginia Tech on Saturday, March 27 at 5 p.m.
