women's lacrosse team saw its season come to an end Friday afternoon with a 16-0 loss to the #5 Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the opening round on the 2021 NCAA Tournament. The Colonials captured their first ever conference title in 2021, and conclude the campaign at 14-3 overall following their first appearance in the NCAA postseason. Mackenzie Gandy led the Colonials with four shots. The Irish wasted no time getting on the board Friday afternoon against RMU as Madison Ahern beat Katelyn Miller in tight 28 seconds off the opening draw to give ND a 1-0 lead early. Despite the quick score, Miller managed to come up with two huge stops from near point-blank range over the next two minutes to keep the Irish lead from snowballing early. Though the Colonials responded with their first bout of sustained pressure of the afternoon, generating offense off of the possession proved difficult as the Irish locked things down defensively, keeping the Colonials to the perimeter and out of the dangerous scoring areas. Hannah Miller earned the first quality look of the day for RMU about ten minutes in after a ND foul set up a free-position attempt, however the senior pushed her shot just wide. Mackenzie Gandy almost put the Colonials on the board shortly thereafter with a shot from the right wing, however her effort was nicely blocked away by Notre Dame keeper Bridget Deehan. After 30 minutes of action, the Irish found themselves up 10-0 following one half of play. With the clock running in the second, the Colonials continued to hunt their first goal. Gandy earned another good look from the win, but once again Deehan managed another great save to keep RMU stifled. Miller continued to shine goal for RMU despite the disadvantage, coming up with another huge pair of point blank stops on Jessi Masinko, one of 11 stops she made on the afternoon. They managed to keep RMU off the board until the sound of the final whistle, wrapping up the win to bring a historic Colonials season to a close.
