The Manhattanville College men's lacrosse team suffered a tough double-overtime loss on the road Wednesday night, March 20, to future Skyline Conference foe Mount Saint Mary College by a score of 10-9.
The Valiants (4-1) found themselves ahead 4-0 early after the first quarter. Senior Erik Sparby (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) started it off against the Knights (3-4) with his fourth of the season at 12:29 in the first, followed by junior Wil Duval's eighth to make it 2-0 at 10:04. Junior Gianni Ciffone (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) scored his team-leading 18th at 6:27 in the quarter, and rookie Harrison Yoguez (Trumbull, Conn./St. Joseph (H.S.)) notched his sixth to make it 4-0.
Mount Saint Mary scored the first three of the second quarter, all in man-up situations, to make it 4-3, but Manhattanville closed out the half with a pair of man-up goals of its own in the last two and a half minutes to take the 6-3 lead into halftime. Senior T.J. Caccavo (Carlsbad, Calif./San Marcos) and rookie Matt LaBash (Stratford, Conn./St. Joseph (H.S.)) were the goal scorers.
The Knights outscored the Valiants 3-1 in the third quarter, unfortunately, and Manhattanville took a slim 7-6 lead into the final quarter of play. MSMC tied it up at 7-7 briefly early on in the fourth before Duval scored his second of the game on a man-up with 7:31 remaining in regulation to give the Valiants the 8-7 lead. The Knights scored twice in a 1:15 span to take a 9-8 lead with 5:39 remaining before Caccavo scored his second of the game to tie it a 9-9 with 2:30 left and eventually force overtime.
Neither team scored in the first extra period, but with time winding down, the Knights scored with just 00:09 until the buzzer to take the 10-9 win.
Highlights:
- Duval finished with three points – two goals and an assist – as well as a pair of ground balls.
- Ciffone and Caccavo each scored twice as well and collected two ground balls apiece.
- Senior Sam Hahn (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) notched five ground balls and caused a turnover, while classmate Soya Goto (Rye, N.Y./Rye) and junior Conor Keough (East Longmeadow, Mass./Suffield) each had four ground balls. Goto caused one turnover and Keough caused a pair.
- Junior netminder Jason Frezza (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Portledge) made 14 saves on 24 shots and scooped up a team-high six ground balls.
Manhattanville returns to the field for another road game this Saturday afternoon, March 23, in Throggs Neck, N.Y., for a 4:00 p.m. meeting with another future Skyline opponent in SUNY Maritime.
