Cooper Urban scored five times and JT Kelly set up six goals with a goal of his own to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team to a 16-6 victory over MIT in a non-league game at East Campus Stadium. Rensselaer is now 3-0, while the Engineers fall to 0-3. RPI held a 9-0 lead at halftime and eventually increased its advantage to 12 goals (13-1) with 3:49 to play in the third quarter on its way to improving to 6-0 all-time against MIT. The visiting Engineers battled back with four straight goals to get to within 13-5 early in the fourth quarter, but Rensselaer tallied three of the final four for the 10-goal victory. Urban, a freshman, started the scoring at 10:37 of the first quarter before senior Lucas Bastarache added an extra-man goal off an assist from Kelly 1:12 later. Urban's second of the game made it 3-0 after one. Kelly set up Will Hatcher at 12:28 of the second quarter before Cliff Kigar tallied 34 seconds later to make it 5-0. Urban and Kelly worked together for the sixth goal before Kelly tallied off a pass from Bastarache. Urban's fourth of the half with an assist to Bastarache made it 8-0 and Parker Jean, who had an assist on Kigar's goal, ended the first half scoring with Kelly picking up his fourth helper. Both teams scored four goals in the third quarter with MIT's Jack Montinaro scoring unassisted to get the visitors on the board. Three others notched goals in the frame for the visitors, while Urban, Owen Putman (twice) and Kigar scored for Rensselaer. Adam Westley of MIT began the fourth quarter with a goal, but Kigar answered 54 seconds later. Liam Miller picked up his second of the contest for MIT with 7:13 remaining, but Rensselaer's JP McGrady and Rhys Zoldi countered. Kelly, a senior, had a game-high seven points, while Urban had five. Kigar finished with three goals and Bastarache and Jean both had a goal and two assists. Eight others had at least one point for the Engineers, who had 14 assists on its 16 goals. Nicki Phelps (4 of 5 on faceoffs) and Zach Lima both had four ground balls and Keaton Ackermann caused four turnovers. Four goalies saw action with starter Brian Doughty making nine saves in the first half for the win. Kyle Botsford stopped seven shots in the first 22:22 of the second half. For MIT, three goalies combined to make eight saves. Luke Gianni chipped in with a goal with 11 ground balls after winning 14 of 22 faceoffs and Miller was the only player with multiple points. MIT is back in action on Thursday at 4pm when it plays at Curry College. RPI is back home on Saturday to face Babson College (2pm).
