– John Wagner's career-high five goals were not enough for the Marquette University men's lacrosse team in a 10-9 overtime loss to No. 3 Duke on Saturday in the 'Battle at Bethpage VI' at Bethpage High School. The Golden Eagles (6-7), who were in search of their first victory against Duke in seven tries, led 9-8 at the 10:34 mark of the fourth quarter on an Andrew Romagnoli score. The Blue Devils (11-3) proceeded to score the final two goals for the win. Marquette was able to hold Duke off the board at the end of regulation but could not capitalize on an extended possession in overtime. Wagner scored a pair of goals in both the first and third quarters and evened the score, 8-8, with 12:53 left in regulation. Brad Smith posted the game winner for Duke with 32 seconds remaining in the first overtime period on a feed from Nakeie Montgomery. The Blue Devils scored with 10-or-fewer seconds left in both the second and third quarters to take one-goal leads into the third and fourth frames. In addition to Wagner's five scores, classmate Bob Pelton tacked on a pair and Tanner Thomson assisted on five tallies. The Golden Eagles held strong defensively against a potent Duke offense with John Hulsman making 11 saves between the pipes. LSM Noah Richard posted career-highs of nine ground balls and four caused turnovers, while Brendon Connolly picked up five ground balls. Statistics in Saturday's game were almost identical across the board as MU held a 40-39 edge in shots, while Duke claimed 30 ground balls to MU's 29 and won 12-of-22 face-offs. Both goalies made 11 saves but MU scored on two of three extra-man opportunities. Marquette concludes the regular season on Friday, April 26 against No. 12/13 Denver at Valley Fields. The game is slated for 8 p.m. Central time and will air live on FS1. MU will also host a pregame tailgate, 'Rally in the Valley' at Valley Fields for all students and community members.
