The Princeton men's lacrosse team has had a lifetime's worth of opposing goalies who play out of their minds in the last three weeks alone. Two Saturdays ago it was Virginia's Patrick Burkinshaw who left the Tigers frustrated. This time it was Max Edelmann's turn. On a day when the Princeton defense shut out No. 20 Rutgers for the final 32 minutes, Edelmann made 18 saves, including a big one on Charlie Durbin in the final 10 seconds, to lead Rutgers to a 9-8 win to take back the Meistrell Cup. Edelmann's 18 saves weren't quite the 24 that Burkinshaw had made in a 12-11 victory on Sherrerd Field, but they left Princeton frustrated once again. Princeton is now 2-3 on the season, with three losses by a combined four goals, while Rutgers is now 4-2 on the season. The teams have now played 97 times, and Princeton leads the series 63-31-3. Princeton fell behind 3-2 on a goal as time expired in the first quarter and then 9-3 with 2:28 to go in the half. From that point, the Scarlet Knights would not score again. The Tigers, meanwhile, began to chip away at the six-goal deficit, making it 9-6 at the end of the third and then 9-8 when Chris Brown scored from Jake Stevens with 2:24 to go. Princeton's last chance saw Michael Sowers skip a pass to Durbin, whose shot from 10-yards out was stopped by Edelmann. NOTES * Brown led Princeton with three goals, while Durbin and Sowers (2G, 1A each) also had three-point days. Brown now has a goal in all 18 games of his career. * Freshman Alexander Vardaro had a goal, extending his streak of at least one point in every game this season. * Sowers, who was shut out in the first half, has at least two points in every game of his career. He also now has 195 career points, leaving him five away from becoming the seventh Princeton player - and first junior - to reach 200 career points. * Jack-Henry Vara won 12 of 18 face-offs and is now 41 for 66 (.621) for the season. * Jake Stevens had four ground balls, an assist and a caused turnover. * Princeton opens its Ivy League season at Penn next Saturday (3:30 face-off).
