NOTRE DAME, IN – No. 1 Maryland's explosive offense came alive, the defense was stellar and Maryland dominated on face-offs as Terps moved to 5-0 with an 11-9 victory at No. 7 Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon at Arlotta Family Stadium. Jack Brennan, Kyle Long, Eric Malever and Logan Wisnauskas each scored two goals and Long and Wisnauskas added two assists for four-point games. Three other Terps tallied one goal: Anthony DeMaio, Jack Koras and Roman Puglise. Goalie Logan McNaney made 12 saves as the Terps defense was solid all game with several highlight stops. On defense, Ajax Zappitello had three caused turnovers to lead all players in CTs. Face-off man Luke Wierman rebounded after losing all four first-quarter draws and won 14 of the next 15 and 18 of the bext 20 in the game as the Terps took control. Overall he won 18-of-24 in the game. Breaking Down The Action Maryland trailed 2-1 after the first quarter as Loagn McNaney kept the Terps close with five saves including some sparkling stops, including two in the final minute of the period. The Terps got the offense going in the second quarter as they scored two early goals in less than a minute with Malever and Wisnauskas scoring to give the Terps their first lead of the game at 3-2. Jack Koras and Roman Puglise both took advantage of Irish miscues as Wisnauskas set up both goals for a 5-3 Terrapin lead with 8:25 left in the second. Maryland ripped off three goals in the first 1:42 of the second half as Long, DeMaio and Brennan all scored off three straight face-off wins. That put the Terps up 8-4. After Brennan tallied his second of the quarter, the Irish scored two goals in the final minute to make it 9-7 after 45 minutes. Malever scored his second of the game to re-gain a two-goal lead for Maryland, but Notre Dame answered, making it 10-9 with 6:52 left in regulation. Long's rip with just under five minutes left returned the margin to two at 11-9. Wisnauskas Watch With his two goals, Wisnauskas notched his 32nd career hat trick as a Terp and fifth in as many games this season. Wisnauskas's two goals gives him 162 for his career, he stands second all-time in career goals, trailing only Jared Bernhardt (202). With four points in the game, Wisnauskas stands second all-time in career points in Maryland history with 266. Bernhardt leads with 290 points. The Sykesville, MD native has tallied a point in all 62 games of his collegiate career. Wisnauskas now has 104 assists in his career passing Matt Rambo for seventh at Maryland. Next on the list at No. 6 John Kaestner (105). It was his 50th mutli-goal game and fifth in as many games this season. Terp Tidbits Since John Tillman took over the program in 2011, Maryland is 126-16 (.888) when it scores 10 or more goals. Maryland is also 89-13 (.873) in the last seven seasons when scoring at least 10 goals. Series History The Terps are now 9-6 against Notre Dame in program history winning the last three games in a row. Prior to Saturday, Maryland posted back-to-back victories over the Irish with victories in the 2021 NCAA Tournament and the 2020 regular season. Prior to Saturday, Terps and Irish last met on March 23, 2021, in the NCAA Quarterfinals. The Teprs came out on top 14-13 in overtime with the game-winner from Anthony DeMaio.
