DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 4, 2022) – Powered by 14 different Mavericks scoring, the No. 5 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a convincing 18-7 win over ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College on Monday afternoon at Mercy Field. The Mavericks (7-1, 2-0 ECC) have won four games in a row, while the Spartans (1-9, 0-2 ECC) remain winless in ECC play. Senior Brady Kearnan (Courtice, Ontario/Newberry College) had two goals and now has 101 career goals with 38 coming at Newberry during his freshman season. Junior TJ Heyder (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) and seniors Marty Shargel (Agoura Hills, Calif./Onondaga CC) and Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) also had two goals and graduate student Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) had a game-high three points on a goal and two assists. Graduate student Shane Gibbons (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Long Island University) and junior Robert Guglielmo (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) each had a goal and an assist. Junior Mustapha Daffeh (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) had his first collegiate goal and assist and went 7-for-7 on faceoffs with four ground balls. Graduate student Robert LoRicco (Guilford, Conn./University at Albany), sophomores Cristian Castles (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage), Kyle Gabrinowitz (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage), Andrew Calabria (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) and Justin DeMonte (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) and freshman Ian Votta (Levittown, N.Y./NJIT) also scored. Senior Jake Fitzgerald (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) had a game-high four caused turnovers with three ground balls and sophomore Jason Kuehner (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) went 6-for-7 on faceoffs with four ground balls. Senior Tommy Umano (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made three saves in the first quarter to earn the win. Sophomores Giovanni Guido (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) and Tyler Vassell (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) each made a save in the fourth quarter. St. Thomas Aquinas was led by Reno Molina who had a team-high two goals. Giorgio D'Angelo made 11 saves in the first half to take the loss. The game remained scoreless for nearly three minutes with Umano and D'Angelo each making two early saves. Jack Gibbons got Mercy going with his first goal of the day at the 12:08 mark to make it 1-0. Heyder, Jack Gibbons and Kearnan rattled off three straight goals in just over a minute to give Mercy a 4-0 lead with 9:26 left in the first quarter. Jonathan Farley scored a man-up goal for the Spartans to make it 4-1 with 7:45 on the clock. Scorcia, Kearnan, Guglielmo and LoRicco ended the quarter with four straight goals to give the Mavericks a commanding 8-1 lead after one quarter. Calabria got in the scoring column at the 8:51 mark of the second quarter to make it 9-1. Castles ensued with his first goal of the year less than a minute later to put the Mavericks up 10-1. Heyder and Shargel continued the onslaught with back-to-back goals to give Mercy a 12-1 lead at halftime. Daffeh won the opening faceoff of the third quarter and took it himself for his first collegiate goal to give Mercy a 13-1 lead. Gabrinowitz netted his first goal of the season less than a minute later to make it 14-1 and Shargel later made it 15-1 with his second of the day at the 12:55 mark. Jason Beddows made it 15-2 with 7:54 left in the quarter, but DeMonte and Shane Gibbons answered with back-to-back goals to put Mercy up, 17-2, with 6:37 left in the quarter. A Stephen Stolarski goal made it 17-3 after three quarters of play. The Spartans scored the first four goals of the fourth quarter to make it 17-7. However, Votta put the finishing touches on the win with a goal with just over a minute left to give Mercy the 18-7 victory. Mercy held a 55-24 edge in shots, a 43-14 edge in ground balls and went 23-for-28 on faceoffs. Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, April 10th when they host D'Youville for Senior Day at 2 p.m.
