The No. 18 Dartmouth women's lacrosse dropped a heartbreaker to No. 12 Penn in the Ivy League Tournament Semifinal Friday afternoon at Columbia. The third-seeded Quakers (12-4) advanced to the Ivy Championship thanks to a 15-14 victory at the expense of the second-seeded Big Green (11-5). Dartmouth will now wait to see if it has qualified for the 2019 NCAA Tournament with the selection show set for Sunday night at 8 p.m. on NCAA.com. The Big Green trailed by as many as four in the final minutes of the game, but a three-goal run by the team from Hanover cut the deficit to one at 14-13 with 4:28 to play. Penn scored another, only to see Kierra Sweeney notch her fifth of the game with 1:36 to go to make it a one-goal game once again. The Quakers got the ball back on the draw, only to lose it to a turnover with roughly 70 seconds left in regulation. However, due to a yellow card and down a player, the Green and White made a numerical misstep and went offside, giving the ball back to Penn, who ran out the clock. "We haven't had a bad loss all season," head coach Danielle Spencer said. "We beat Penn earlier in the year and made a huge improvement from last year. The NCAA has taken three Ivies before, so we just hope they'll do it again." Sweeney's five goals in the contest pushed her season point total to 70, tying her for the fourth-best single-season mark in program history. No Dartmouth player had touched the 70-point season since Katieanne Christian did so in 2005. Fellow senior Elizabeth Mastrio scored four goals of her own and finished with five points, while picking up three draw controls, moving her career total to 101 and becoming the third player in Dartmouth history with at least 100 career goals and 100 career draws. Sophia Turchetta scored twice off the bench with the Green also getting goals from Ellie Carson, Kellen D'Alleva and Campbell Brewer. D'Alleva also dished out two helpers to push her single-season assist record to 43 this spring. Kathryn Giroux picked up six draws and moved into 11th all-time in NCAA history with 401 for her career. Claire Marshall also had six in the game and went over 100 draws for her career as well. Erin Barry led the way for Penn with five goals, while Zoe Belodeau and Gabby Rosenzweig each had three. The Quakers' best player, though, was goalkeeper Mikaila Cheeseman and her 13 saves, stopping many of the Big Green's best scoring opportunities and cutting quality possessions short without a goal. She had 10 alone in the first half. Kiera Vrindten made big stops of her own, posting five saves. Dartmouth now waits to see if it will make its 15th NCAA Tournament appearance with a bid to the 2019 national postseason.
