Mount Olive claimed a battle of nationally-ranked teams, topping Catawba 12-3 in men’s lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Trojans, ranked 15th, improve to 2-0, while the 16th-ranked Catawba Indians fall to 1-1. The Trojans defense held Catawba to just one goal over the first 40 minutes of the game. Payton Leonard had scored a goal for the Indians at the 7:29 mark of the opening quarter and Catawba did not score again until Tucker Fanzo’s tally with 5:16 left in the third quarter. Matt Mitchell followed Fanzo’s goal at the 2:13 mark of the quarter and Catawba was within 6-3. The Trojans went on to score the game’s final six goals to pull away. Lucas Shein had a pair of goals and an assist for Mount Olive. Braydon Hickey scored twice. Andrew Avarello recorded 11 saves in goal. Mike Marto won 13-of-18 face-offs. Catawba returns to action on Feb. 27, traveling to face North Greenville at 1 p.m.
