The Binghamton men's lacrosse team (4-9, 1-3 AE) fell to UMBC (4-7, 2-2 AE) 5-2 at the Bearcats Sports Complex on Saturday evening. Prior to the game the Bearcats honored their ten graduating seniors. "We played a lot of defense today," said head coach Kevin McKeown. "UMBC played a great game and their zone was really tough to crack. They did a great job controlling the ball on offense and we had trouble playing their pace of game." Austin Macchi won 7-of-11 faceoffs and Kevin Carbone made 11 saves in the net. Binghamton struck first when Sean Gilroy scored on a pass from Thomas McAndrew at 13:46 to give the Bearcats an early 1-0 lead. UMBC answered, netting a goal to tie the game at one with two minutes to play in the first period. 20 seconds later, Gilroy scored again. This time on a pass from Jon Perotto to give Binghamton a 2-1 lead heading in to the second period. UMBC scored twice in the second period and held Binghamton scoreless to end the first half leading the Bearcats 3-2. Neither team scored in the third period of play. The Retrievers increased their lead to 4-2 with 4:45 left to play in the game. Macchi won the next faceoff to give Binghamton an opportunity to score, but UMBC came up with the ball and charged down the field. The Bearcats face guarded every UMBC attackmen but they were able to get a shot off on an open net and secure their 5-2 victory. Sean Gilroy lead the Bearcats offensively with two goals while Kyle Tiernan and Austin Macchi each picked up four ground balls. Timothy Mattiace caused two turnovers. The Bearcats will travel to No. 2 Albany next Friday, April 20. The America East contest is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
