No. 19 Franklin & Marshall delivered a convincing 13-8 upset of No. 7 Gettysburg Wednesday evening in men's lacrosse action. The Diplomats improved to 6-3, 2-0 CC, while the Bullets fell to 7-3, 1-1 CC.
The Bullets struck just six seconds into the game before Blake Target buried a pass from Tucker McBride at 9:06 to tie it. Two from the Bullets made it 3-1 at 5:01 and back-to-back scores by Kevin Mollihan tied the game at 3-3 at the end of the first.
Gettysburg had another early goal to start the second to go back on top before F&M netted two for a 5-4 edge at 6:21. The Bullets tied the game at 5-5 with 3:53 left in the second and F&M countered two minutes when Target finished off a pass from Tucker McBride to give the Diplomat a 6-5 lead at the break.
F&M owned the opening four minutes of the third with 3-0 run on goals by McBride, Keating, and Mollihan which put the Diplomats on top 9-5 at 11:01. Gettysburg came within three, 9-6, at 9:40, but Mollihan struck two minutes later to make it 10-6 which held through the end of the quarter.
Keating picked up his third early in the fourth and after two goals by the Bullets made it 11-8, Jarrett Donaghy stopped the run at 4:07 with a goal and Jack Beatty struck just seven seconds later to make it 13-8.
Tucker McBride had four helpers and one goal to lead the offense with Kevin Mollihan tallying four goals. Luke Keating struck three times with an assist, Jarrett Donaghy had a goal and an assist while Spencer Hall along with Jack Beatty both netted a goal. Blake Target recorded two scores for the Diplomats, and Beatty won 19-of-25 face-offs for F&M.
Noah Isaacson led the defense with two caused turnovers, and three ground balls and Luke Mutterer had an outstanding came in goal with 10 stops and improved to 2-0.
F&M outshot Gettysburg 38-29, held a 34-26 edge in ground balls and went 22-of-26 on clear attempts.
The Diplomats return to action on Saturday when F&M hosts Haverford at 12:00 p.m.
