Fairfield University Men's Lacrosse erased two four-goal deficits in the second half of Saturday afternoon's Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) clash with visiting Drexel. However, the Dragons struck last in the back-and-forth affair to leave Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium with a 16-14 victory. Colin Burke had a career day with eight points for the Stags. With the loss, Fairfield falls to 1-2 in the CAA and 4-9 overall. The Stags' last four outings have been decided by a total of five goals, including last Friday's 5-4 conference win at Hofstra. Drexel improves to 5-6 overall and 1-2 in CAA action. Burke's eight points are the most by a Stag since Travis Nelson racked up 10 points – tying the program record – against Harvard on March 18, 2007. His day consisted of three goals and a career-best five assists. On the career charts, Burke moves into a tie with Greg Downing for sixth in points (141) with his performance today and also now sits in eighth both in goals (88) and assists (53). With 16 goals and 21 assists this season for a team-best 37 total points, he is now one of just six Stags to record 30+ points in each of their first three seasons at Fairfield. Burke was one of three Stags to net a hat trick on the day along with Jack Brennan and Brendan Quinn. Brennan's hat trick was the third of his career while Quinn has scored three goals in a game twice – both this season. Rounding out the attack were single goals from Joe Rodrigues, Dylan Beckwith, Taylor Strough, Liam DaRos and McKay Sheahan. In addition to Burke's five assists, Drew Murray distributed two while Beckwith, Brennan, Rodrigues and J.B. Smith handed out one apiece. Max McGuire and Sean McKee split the effort in the cage and came away with two and three saves, respectively. The defensive effort in front of them was led by Smith with two caused turnovers and one ground ball, while Andrew Murrow collected two ground balls while causing one Drexel turnover. In the midfield, Bill McMenamin won four faceoffs and scooped up three ground balls. Will Fox won three draws and Jake Tymon came away with one. Drexel was led by three goals and two assists by Reid Bowering, while Matthew Varian facilitated the offense with five assists as well as one goal of his own. Jimmeh Koita kept the Dragons on the attack with a 25-for-32 day at the faceoff X with 18 ground balls. Chre Teitelbaum made eight stops in the cage to earn the win. The Stags trailed by as many as five goals in the first half at 9-4 before adding a late Beckwith transition goal with 1:00 left in the second period. The momentum from the marker carried through the intermission and into the third quarter, where the Stags got goals from Quinn, DaRos, Brennan and Burke all in a span of 5:10 to pull even at 9-9 midway through the frame. However, Drexel responded with a similar burst, netting four goals over the final 4:13 of the quarter to carry a 13-9 advantage into the fourth period. Fairfield put together a similar rally in the final frame, started by Sheahan's man-up goal just 25 seconds into the stanza. Brennan, Strough and Burke all added goals in short order to knot the score at 13-13 with 8:47 to play. The Stags' first lead of the day came with 6:07 remaining as Quinn completed his hat trick off of Burke's fifth assist of the day to put the hosts on top 14-13. But the Stags would not score away as Robert Frazee netted the equalizer for Drexel and Bowering got the go-ahead score with 2:59 left. The Dragons added an insurance tally courtesy of Cam Harris to round out the 16-14 final tally. The Stags are back on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium next Saturday, April 21 for a visit from UMass live on the Lax Sports Network. Fairfield will recognize its 2018 senior class prior to the 1 p.m. opening faceoff. The Minutemen are 8-4 overall and stand as the CAA's last unbeaten at 3-0 after today's 8-3 home win over Towson on Garber Field.
