Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action returned to Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium as Fairfield University Men's Lacrosse hosted the #19 nationally-ranked Hofstra Pride on Friday night. A Taylor Strough hat trick and 18 saves from Colin Consoli in the cage were not enough for the Stags to overcome the high-powered Hofstra attack in 15-7 loss. Strough added an assist to his hat trick to round out a four-point day. Dylan Beckwith scored a goal with two assists, surpassing Will Manny of UMass for second place on the CAA's career list. With 96 career helpers, Beckwith is six shy of the mark of 102 racked up by Delaware's Cam Howard from 2004-08. Matt Chlastawa dished out a pair of assists, running his point total to 17 for the season. In doing so, he also reached the 300-point mark for his collegiate career. Chlastawa piled up 284 points during his All-America tenure at Division III Bates. Rounding out the scoring were Patrick Drake, Trent Moran and Tyler Wuchte with one goal apiece, while Jake Coleman picked up his first career assist in his Fairfield debut. Consoli's 18 saves marked a career high for the freshman, who owns a .512 save percentage this season. The defense in front of him was led by Tyler Burns with six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Dean Ford scooped up three grounders in the midfield and from the wing, and Lucas Pedersen picked up a pair. The Stags led after the opening quarter by a 2-1 count on a Moran goal and a man-up tally from Strough. but Hofstra broke the contest open with six goals apiece in the second and third frames – coming in the form of three separate 4-0 runs – to negate the Stags scoring the rest of the way. "I thought we showed flashes of who we want to be, in the first quarter in particular, but we need to start executing for 60 minutes," said Head Coach Andrew Baxter. "We weren't able to control the tempo of the game, and that hurt us." Ryan Tierney – the CAA's leading scorer – led Hofstra with five goals and an assist. Riley Forte and Justin Lynskey each added a hat trick for the Pride. In the midfield, Brian Herber kept the visitors on offense with an 18-for-24 performance at the faceoff X, including 12 ground balls. Hofstra welcomed Bobby Casey back to action for the first time this season after starting every game in 2019 and 2020 for the Pride. Casey made 11 saves in the victory. CAA play continues for the Stags next Friday, April 2 for a noon rematch at Delaware. The #14/14 Blue Hens are 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the CAA, including a win over the Stags at Rafferty Stadium on March 6.
