Holy Cross defeated Colgate for the fourth consecutive season, this time with an 11-5 decision here Saturday afternoon. That outcome, coupled with Boston University's takedown of No. 2-ranked Loyola, eliminated the Raiders from the Patriot League Tournament. Holy Cross scored on its first two extra-man opportunities, taking a 2-0 lead early in the second quarter. That margin expanded to 4-0 before Sam Cleveland got one back for the Raiders with a smoldering shot into the left lower corner with 4:24 showing before halftime. The Raiders went into the break trailing 4-1. Down 5-1, Colgate scored back-to-back goals to pull within 5-3, with a chance for more on a 2-minute non-releasable penalty. But Holy Cross fought off the penalty and then scored the next five goals over an 11:09 stretch to put the game away. Raider Facts & Figures • Sam Cleveland had one goal (14) and one assist (13) to stay atop the team points race with 27. • The Raiders lead the all-time series against Holy Cross 25-5 but have lost four in a row. • Colgate's five goals, 24 shots and 14 shots on goal were all season lows. • Griffin Brown took over the team lead in goals with his 17th. • The Raiders were outshot 10-0 in the first quarter and 24-8 in the first half. Colgate's first shot of the game didn't happen until 12:28 remaining in the second quarter. • The first quarter scoreboard read 1-0 Holy Cross as both teams committed eight turnovers. From the Source • Colgate head coach Matt Karweck: (On the seniors) "I'm so proud of our seniors for starting to develop the culture that's going to give us the chance to win. We didn't have it this year, and I'm sorry to them and their families that we couldn't give ourselves a chance to make a run in the tournament. "What I told the seniors at the end is they still have a legacy to leave in these next two weeks, and to continue to be the identity we've been all year. Off the field and the way we practiced, we always showed great energy and great execution; we just didn't do it on the field as much as I would have liked. "The senior class and the senior parents in particular have helped us have a culture shift here, and that's a beautiful thing. That's a challenging thing, but in future years when we're contending, it's because of their commitment to a shift in culture. And I'm so proud of that. "Now for the next two weeks, we have a choice. We can go back to the way it was, or we be the team that we talk about being every day, by challenging ourselves to go out of the way to accomplish a particular task, whatever it may be. But the challenge for them is to lead over the next weeks when there is no carrot, no incentive. When there's no incentive and no carrot, the true character of who you are comes out, and that's our challenge the next two weeks. "I wish them the best. I wish we could have done more for them. I wish I would have been better. I wish we would have prepared them better. But the next two weeks are really important for our culture. And I know our senior class has the ability to lead through this so that one day, the way they are this year and the way they are as alumni of this program, will leave a lasting legacy for Colgate Lacrosse."
