Canisius tallied eight the final 10 goals of the contest to overcome a four-goal deficit and defeat Binghamton, 12-10, in collegiate men's lacrosse action Tuesday at the Bearcat Sports Complex in Vestal, N.Y. Senior Connor Kearnan tallied four goals and added four assists to lead the Golden Griffins (1-1) comeback as they picked up their first victory under new head coach Mark Miyashita. Sophomore Carter Stefaniak tallied two goals and an assist while fellow sophomore Mathieu Boissonneault chipped in two goals, including the game-winning tally midway through the fourth quarter. Stephen Petrelli scored four goals and added an assist to pace the Bearcats (0-3). Trailing 8-4 late in the second quarter, Canisius used back-to-back goals from Kearnan and senior Cody Filson to trim the Griffs deficit to two, 8-6, heading into the halftime break. Canisius carried the momentum into the third quarter as it opened the frame with tallies from senior Steven Coss, sophomore Reece Eddy and Stefaniak to take a 9-8 lead. Binghamton responded to the Canisius charge as Sean Maker ended an 18:32 scoring drought for the Bearcats to tie the game at 9-9 before Petrelli restored Binghamton's lead, 10-9, early in the fourth. It would be all Canisius the rest of the way, however, as Kearnan knotted the game at 10-all a little less than four minutes later before Boissonneault recorded the eventual game-winning goal with 5:23 to play. Stefaniak notched an insurance marker with 1:23 on the clock to determine the final margin. Earlier in the contest, Canisius held a 2-1 lead midway through the first before the Bearcats rattled off five unanswered to take a 6-2 lead. The teams traded goals before Petrelli gave Binghamton an 8-4 lead with just under five minutes to play in the second quarter, setting the stage for the Griffs comeback. Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Postgame Comments "Obviously, this win goes on the head coaches' record, but this was truly a team victory. We were able to pick ourselves up after a tough loss on Saturday and the guys bought into the scouting report that the staff put together for today's game. "We struggled at the faceoff X in the early going and that led to some trouble for us, but we were able to settle in and make plays. We made some adjustments and got everyone on the same page at halftime. We showed the guys some video from the first half, which really helped us make the proper adjustments. We were also able to get the offense going as we executed the systems we implemented during the preseason, which gave us newfound confidence when we had possession. "This win is the first in a new era for Canisius lacrosse and I'm proud of every guy for the effort they put in towards helping us get this victory today. Now, we need to turn our focus to preparing for Saturday's contest against a talented Furman squad.
