Senior Steven Coss scored 14 seconds into overtime to lift Canisius to a 14-13 victory over Furman in collegiate men's lacrosse action Saturday at Radnor High School in Wayne, Pa. Coss' extra-session marker completed a hat trick for the Canton, Ohio, product and capped a comeback that saw the Golden Griffins (2-1) battle back from a five-goal deficit to pick up its second come-from-behind victory of the young season. Senior Ryan McKee and sophomore Carter Stefaniak also recorded hat tricks for Canisius while senior Connor Kearnan tallied two goals and dished out a personal-best seven assists to match his career high with nine points. David Williamson scored four goals and William Holcomb tallied three goals and an assist for the Paladins (0-4). Trailing 7-2 midway through the second quarter, the Griffs scored three of the final four goals of the frame, highlighted by tallies from Kearnan and McKee just 1:17 apart, to trim the Canisius deficit to three heading into the break. The teams battled back and forth during the early portion of the third quarter before Coss and Kearnan spearheaded another late charge for the Griffs, this time finding the back of the net twice in the final 1:21 of the stanza to cut the Paladins' cushion to 11-9. Sophomore Mathieu Boissonneault pulled Canisius within one at the 11:44 mark of the fourth with a man-up goal, only to see Holcomb answer back a little more than a minute later to restore Furman's two-goal advantage, 12-10. Canisius once again had an answer as Stefaniak notched his third of the contest exactly three minutes after Holcomb's tally to make it a one-goal game before McKee and Coss struck twice in a 42-second span later in the frame to give the Griffs their first lead of the afternoon, 13-12. The lead would be short lived however, as Holcomb responded with his third of the game less than a minute later to knot the score at 13-all and send the game to overtime. In the extra session, Canisius won the opening faceoff and called timeout to draw up a play. When play resumed, the Griffs quickly worked the ball to Coss, who found the back of the net to give the Griffs the overtime victory. Earlier in the contest, with the score tied at 2-2 in the first quarter, Williamson struck for his first of the afternoon at the 7:41 mark of the opening frame to ignite a 5-0 run that lasted more than 15 minutes and gave the Paladins a 7-2 cushion, setting up the Canisius comeback. Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Postgame Comments "All perseverance, that was all it was. We dug ourselves a hole early on, but we were able to stay together as a team and weather that storm. The end of the second quarter, we got those three goals, which gave us a little bit of momentum. We used that to propel us into the second half. "It's a belief in one another. The guys are coming together as a group and understanding that if they stay together and re-focus and re-calibrate themselves when things are not going their way, that we're never out of a game as long as we're willing to come together and fight. "Connor did not have his A game against Dartmouth and he knew it. He came in and did extra work, did some extra shooting and watched some film with the coaches to see what was and was not working. He's made some adjustments to his game based upon doing that extra work and he's adapted to what he needs to do to be more successful as the marked man on our team." Game Notes • Saturday's contest marked the second meeting between Canisius and Furman. The teams have now split their two matchups as both contests have gone to overtime. • Saturday's affair was the first overtime game for the Griffs since an 8-7 setback to Hobart on March 15, 2016. It was also the first overtime win since 10-9 victory against Siena on March 28, 2015. • Senior Connor Kearnan established a new career high with seven assists, breaking his previous mark of five set against Dartmouth on Feb. 18, 2017. Kearnan also matched his personal best with nine points, also set against the Big Green last February. • With his nine-point effort, Kearnan moved into sole possession of 15th place on the program's career points chart (118). Kearnan is just three points away from matching Nick LoCoco (2008-11) and former teammate Jeff Edwards (2014-17) for 13th place. • Sophomore Carter Stefaniak recorded his second hat trick of the season with his three-goal effort on Saturday. • Senior Ryan McKee posted his seventh career hat trick with his three goals versus the Paladins. • Senior Steven Coss notched his third career hat trick with his three goals against Furman.
