Villanova, Pa- Offense was the buzz word for the afternoon as Villanova registered a 20-8 victory over St. John's on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Wildcats improve to 3-1 on the season while the Red Storm fall to 1-3. Today's game marks the first time since March 5th, 2016 that the Wildcats have scored 20 goals in a game. Villanova was led by junior attacker Patrick Daly and senior Keegan Khan who both paced the Wildcats with seven points. Daly registered a game high five goals and dished out two assists while Khan flipped those stats, having two goals and five assists. A total of 11 different Wildcats contributed points with the team combining for 33 points. The Red Storm netted the game opening goal just four minutes in but the Wildcats offense kicked in after scoring seven straight goals starting with 10 minutes to go in the first and closing in the opening seconds of the second quarter. Rookie Tucker Goodelle got his first career start and dished it to Colin Crowley for Villanova's first goal. Justin Coppola, who had a stand out day at faceoff, dished it to Khan for the second goal. Matt Campbell scored an unassisted for the third goal and then Khan set up Goodelle for his first career goal. Khan kept the assist coming dishing it to Daly, then Daly returned the favor setting up Corey McManus for Villanova's final goal of the first quarter. Coppola scored a goal in the opening seconds of the second quarter after winning a faceoff the sophomore ran down and ripped a shot into the back of the cage to put Villanova up 7-2. St. John's was able to break up the run but Villanova will answer with another seven goal run. Gooodle set up Jimmy Gabrielsen at the 9:04 mark in the second, then five minutes later Daly scored followed by one from Khan to put Villanova up 10-2. The Wildcat offense scored three goals in the final two minutes. During a one minute EMO opportunity they netted two goals, the first was by Daly the second Crowley. To close out the half Khan dished it to Goodelle to make it 13-2 Villanova at the half. Daly opened third quarter scoring with a goal and St. John's got on the board a minute later. Goodelle netted his third goal of the game on a pass from Khan at 6:44 to put Villanova up 15-3. The Red Storm scored three goals in just over two minutes of action but Villanova would net two more the end of the quarter. Eric Overbay dished it to Campbell with just over a minute to play and then Goodelle set up Daly with just one second to go before the end of the third. Villanova led 18-9 at the end of the third quarter. Campbell scored an unassisted goal to open the fourth it was followed by Gabrielsen scoring his on the game at the 10:35 mark to put Villanova up 19-5. St. John's scored two more but Villanova would net the final goal of the game when Colin Hunt dished it to Michael Clark to make the final 20-8. Coppola went 20-for-22 from the faceoff and had a game high 10 ground balls. Will Vitton had an impressive day in goal registering 11 saves in just over 50 minutes. Brendan Haggerty played the final nine minutes and had two saves. Villanova will continue home play when the Denver Pioneers come to Villanova Stadium. First faceoff is scheduled for 11:00 A.M. on Sunday, March 21st.
