Despite entering the second quarter with a three-goal deficit, the St. John's men's lacrosse team tallied eight consecutive goals to claim its second-straight victory at DaSilva Memorial Field on Saturday afternoon, knocking off Siena, 16-9. The victory on Saturday sealed the Johnnies' (3-3) first 2-0 start at DaSilva Memorial Field since besting Holy Cross and Siena to commence the 2014 campaign. The Red Storm's seven-goal victory marks the program's 21st victory over the Saints in 25 games played. Senior Mike Madsen recorded his third seven-point performance of the 2020 campaign, leading the Johnnies with a career-high six goals and one assist late in the fourth quarter. Joe Madsen fired three goals and the duo of Ryan Schaeffer and Jonathan Huber each fired two tallies in the winning effort. Freshman longpole Ricardo Carreras scored his first two goals of his collegiate career in Saturday's win. Grant Galligan, Matt Oehl, and Dylan Willis each registered a point and sophomore Matt Duncan led the Red Storm with two assists. Freshman faceoff specialist Jonathan Dugenio registered his sixth-consecutive game with double-digit faceoff wins, claiming 12 of his 29 attempts from the X. St. John's outshot Siena 50-36 in Saturday's win and allowed a season-low nine six goals behind sophomore Brody Agres' nine saves. The Red Storm caused a season-high 12 of the Saints' 27 total turnovers. Siena (2-3) was led by Jack Kiernan who fired three tallies and registered two assists. George Rusnak added two goals and four other Saints (Brandon Lantieri, Dylan Pantalone, Brett Habich, and Christian Watts) finished with a goal. Goalkeeper Anthony Tebbano recorded 13 saves in the loss. The Saints maintained control of the game early in the first quarter, exploding with four unanswered goals in less than five minutes of play. Carreras ended the Siena scoring run at the 10:05 mark with the first goal of his career. After Jack Kiernan fired Siena's fifth tally, Mike Madsen responded with his first of six goals with 5:17 left in the period. The Red Storm began its comeback push early in the second quarter behind tallies from Mike Madsen and Schaeffer to cut the Saints' lead to one goal. Christian Watts' goal at the 11:23 mark would be the final goal Siena would score in the half as St. John's stormed back with four goals from Schaeffer, Huber, and both Madsen brothers. The four-goal scoring run gave the Johnnies an 8-6 advantage over the Saints at the break. St. John's picked up where it left off, firing four consecutive tallies over the first seven minutes of the third period to widen its lead to 12-6. Joe Madsen started the half with his second goal of the game while Carreras and Mike Madsen (twice) added goals to invigorate the scoring streak. Siena's Brett Habich scored the team's first goal in over 20 minutes of play to end the Johnnies' scoring run. The Red Storm took a 13-7 lead into the fourth period after Joe Madsen blasted his third score of the quarter. Galligan's tally at the 12:03 mark in the fourth period marked the team's largest lead of the game at 14-7. Both teams would go on to fire two more goals to wrap up St. John's third win of the season. Huber registered his 10th goal of the season while Mike Madsen recorded his team-leading 23rd goal of the year with four minutes remaining in the contest. The Red Storm returns to action in three days as Head Coach Jason Miller's squad will host local rival Hofstra at DaSilva Memorial Field on Tuesday, March 10, at 3 p.m.
