Senior midfielder Charlie Hayes tallied a career-high six caused turnovers with six ground balls and redshirt freshman Logan Shamblin made 14 saves as the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team bested Bellarmine, 11-5, on Friday afternoon. It was the first game of the Midwest Classic, hosted by Detroit Mercy at Wisner Stadium. The six turnovers by Hayes were the most by a Titan since Jamie Hebden set a school record with seven against VMI in 2013. The 14 saves by Shamblin were a season-high for the rookie netminder as he posted double-digit saves for the third time this year. Senior Alec Gilhooly posted his third career hat trick with three goals and sophomore Seth Mendell and freshman Brennan Kamish finished with two apiece. Senior Sean Birney and junior Matthew Vangalen each had a goal and an assist. The Titans (2-3) started strong with five goals in the first period and led 6-1 at the half. Detroit Mercy never let up taking an 8-3 advantage after three periods. Detroit Mercy outshot Bellarmine (1-4), 35-26, had more ground balls (37-25) and saw the Knights commit 20 turnovers with the defense credited with 12 takeaways. The red, white and blue were also a perfect 22-of-22 on clears. Senior Pat Masterson had a caused turnover and a ground ball. Sophomore Alex Akins scooped up four GB's and freshman Brett Erskine had a season-high six. The Titans will return to action on Sunday, March 4, as they conclude the Midwest Classic against nationally-ranked Ohio State.
