The University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team dug itself into a small hole against a Big Ten program on Saturday, but made up the difference en route to a win. The same thing happened on Wednesday night. There were some differences. Instead of giving up the first three goals, like they did Saturday, the Quakers fell behind 5-0 on Wednesday. Instead of being at home, the Red and Blue were on the road. Instead of unranked Michigan, the opponent was defending NCAA champion and current USILA No. 3 Maryland. It was a hole that was too deep to get out of. The Quakers fell to the Terps, 13-6. Maryland (4-0) opened up a 4-0 lead in the first quarter, converting half of their shots in the period while Penn went empty-handed on all 11 of its shots. The Terrapins' four goals came from four different scorers. It was 5-0 before the Quakers (1-1) finally got on the board with a pair of quick goals early in the second. The first came from long pole Jack Ullrich off a feed from Simon Mathias—extending the junior's point-scoring streak to 30 games—and then Kevin McGeary fired home from 15 yards out unassisted. Maryland pushed the lead back up to five on a pair of extra-man goals, both coming from Logan Wisnauskas off of Jared Bernhardt feeds, and then Jared DeMaio used an individual effort to make it 8-2. Wisnauskas finished off a superb first half (he had four before the break) with an underhanded shot that he slid under the crossbar to make it 9-2 at halftime. Tyler Dunn and Mathias opened the second-half scoring just 2:24 apart early in the third quarter. That would be the only scoring for Penn for more than 22 minutes, however, and in the meantime Maryland scored four more times to make the score 13-4. Adam Goldner scored a man-up goal off a Reilly Hupfeldt feed with just 2:28 left in the game to end the Quakers' drought, and then Alex Roesner closed out the scoring shortly after that with a steal and conversion. Up Next Penn hosts No. 1 Duke on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Franklin Field.
