With the game tied through 45 minutes, the Towson University men's lacrosse team used another massive fourth-quarter effort to surge past visiting University of Delaware by a 13-7 count. Towson (5-7, 2-2 CAA) out-scored its longtime Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival Delaware 7-1 in the fourth quarter thanks to two goals each in that frame from Matt Sovero, Johnny Giuffreda and Jean-Luc Chetner. Alex Woodall came alive in the league game as he set a new career best at the faceoff X, winning 22 of his 24 draws. He previous highwater mark was 21 wins against Mount St. Mary's on Feb. 17, 2018. Delaware (5-7, 2-2 CAA) got 14 saves from starting keeper Matt DeLuca, including two in the final 90 seconds of the game. Charlie Kitchen had a four-point, two-goal, two-assist day. How it Happened Towson get the scoring going early as Sovero dodged down the right side of the zone and stung the game's first shot high past DeLuca. The Hens tied the game for the first time at 1-1 at Joe Eislele got a feed inside from Kitchen. The Tigers ran off a three-goal streak from three different goal scorers over a five-minute span. Timmy Monahan got the scoring going a feed from Phil Wies at 8:07, followed three minutes later by a Cheter goal. Grant Maloof dropped the hammer with 3:37 to play in the first quarter to make it 4-1 thanks to a Jake McLean feed. Delaware cut the Tigers' lead in half with nine seconds remaining in the opening period on a goal from Dean DiSimone. The Hens tied the game 4-4 behind back-to-back goals in a relatively low-scoring second quarter. Adam Fulton scored his first of the season on a Will Hirschman feed before DiSimone potted his second of the day at 5:36 of the second. The Tigers snared a 5-4 halftime lead as Chetner scored his second of the day with four minutes to go in the frame. Delaware out-scored the Tigers 2-1 in the third quarter, bookending the period with goals from Kitchen. Brendan Sunday accounted for the lone Towson goal in that frame, finishing a feed from Chetner at 9:38. The third quarter ended in a 6-6 deadlock. The fourth quarter was all Towson as the Tigers racked seven goals. The first three Towson goals of the period came on DeLuca rebounds as Giuffreda, Sovero and Maloof all scored in succession. Wies assisted the final goal of that spurt. Delaware got one back from Matt Schleicher on a Kitchen feed at 10:03 but the Tigers finished the frame with four unanswered. Sovero started the final run on a Giuffreda feed at 8:26 before the latter scored at 2:54. With the Hens pressuring out to try and gain control, Chetner scored back-to-back goals at 1:02 and with 41 seconds left to seal Towson's fourth home win of the year. Behind the Numbers The fourth quarter has been the Tigers speciality at home in league games. Towson has out-scored league foes 15-4 in the final frame of home games this season. Chetner tied his career high with five points thanks to a career-best four goals. His hat trick was the first of his Tiger career and first since May 2, 2015 when he was a member of the University of Richmond program. Sovero added his second career hat trick, ranking with a previous hat trick two weeks ago against Drexel. Shane Brennan finished with five saves for Towson, including a trio in the final quarter. He added two in the first quarter but could not stop the ball in the second and third frames. Towson improved to 4-2 at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium this season, guaranteeing a winning season at home for a seventh-straight season. Those seven seasons are the longest active home winning season streak in the CAA. The Tigers are 6-1 all-time against Delaware under head coach Shawn Nadelen. It was also Towson's 14th regular season CAA win over the Blue Hens. Towson is 41-18 all-time against Delaware since the series began in 1961.
