BOULDER – After two weeks without a game, Colorado's offense was more than ready to play, downing San Diego State 14-5 at the Indoor Practice Facility on Sunday. CU (2-2) recorded 10 goals in the first half and allowed the Aztecs (2-4) just two. The Buffs slowed down a bit in the second half, but still outscored SDSU 4-3. "We came out and we played hard, they were committed to doing the little things we had talked about that we needed to do to be successful," head coach Ann Elliott Whidden said. "A little bit of a tougher second half for us. I wish we had executed better but at the end of the day they have been facing a lot of challenges and they came out and competed and were able to get the job done." A pair of Buffs, senior Sadie Grozier and junior Charlie Rudy, each recorded five goals in the victory. Grozier also added an assist for a game-high six points. As a team, CU was shooting whenever there was a chance, taking 28 shots in the first half and 19 in the second half for the second-most in CU single-game history (47). Grozier and Rudy each recorded career-highs in shots. Grozier took 15, which is now the CU single-game record, while Rudy's 13 is tied for third. "Overall we did pretty well offensively," Whidden said. "Again, in the first half, I thought we did a little better. The second half was a little tougher. I thought for the most part they were taking good shots. We'll work on our shooting at practice and get better from there." CU did not have to spend a lot of time on defense, especially in the first half, but when called upon, the defense stepped up. Senior Julia Lisella made 12 saves, four in the first half and eight in the second. Colorado also totaled 12 caused turnovers. Graduate Kate White led the way with four, while senior Madi Wifall and junior Liz Phillips each recorded two. Four others, senior Eliza Cahill, Grozier, junior Devon Bayer and senior Aine Williams each had one. "I thought defensively they played great," Whidden said. "They came up on us in the second half and our defense had to make some plays and that's what got our win was our defensive effort." WHAT HAPPENED: The Buffaloes charged out of the gate, going up 2-0 in the first three minutes with a pair of goals from Rudy. Her second goal was a man-up goal, her fifth this season, after SDSU was issued a yellow card two minutes into the game. Colorado kept the scoring going. Grozier scored her first of the game at 24:55 and Rudy recorded her third hat-trick of the season at 21:57. Bayer found the back of the net for the second time of the season less than a minute later to put the Buffs up 5-0. SDSU would get on the board at 18:25 with a goal from Lexi Tan, but the Buffs would answer with a pair of goals from Grozier (7-1). Arielle Shahrabani scored SDSU's second marker of the game with 7:22 left in the first half, but again the Buffs would put together a run, this time scoring three straight to end the period (10-2), which included a last-second goal from Rudy. The Aztecs responded in the second half by scoring three straight (10-5), cutting CU's lead to five. Liz Phillips ended SDSU's run with her first goal at 18:58. Grozier recorded her fifth of the game at 12:26 to put CU back up by seven (12-5). Just over three minutes later, Rudy recorded her fifth goal of the game, on the free-position opportunity. The Buffs would score one more time as Zoe Lawless recorded her only goal of the game under the 10-minute mark (7:18) with an assist from Grozier. Both defenses would hold from that point, preventing either side from scoring. MAN-UP GOALS: Charlie Rudy has now scored a man-up goal in three of the four games this season. She has five man-up goals this season, which ranks fifth in CU's season record book. For her career, she currently has 10 man-up goals, which is third all-time at CU behind Miranda Stinson (14) and Johnna Fusco (11). NOTABLE: The Buffs are 45-5 when allowing 5-9 goals Charlie Rudy has scored in nine straight games dating back to the season opener of the 2020 season This was the first game Aine Williams has played for the Buffs Colorado has scored at least two man-up goals in three of its four games this season. CU is 2-1 in the IPF and is 41-12 in Boulder
