NEWARK, Del. – In a top 20 matchup that saw Delaware Stadium packed with fans from both teams, it was No. 20 Delaware (6-2) that was victorious over No. 18 Johns Hopkins (4-5) Sunday night. "The crowd today was electric. It was incredible and we played off that energy," said head coach Ben DeLuca. "I think we managed the game tonight really well. I'm proud of this team and that we were able to get a win. Johns Hopkins has some really good players and skilled shooters. We knew we'd have to slow them down and we did enough today to do just that." Led by Mike Robinson's five goals, the Delaware men's lacrosse team never trailed against Johns Hopkins, as they earned the win at home. The Blue Hens took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter in a 15-minute period that saw both teams playing top-level defense. First, it was a Tye Kurtz goal that swept past the goalie at the 8:46 mark to give Delaware the 1-0 edge. Next, it was Robinson who found an opening from 10 yards out to put Delaware up 2-0, followed by a Clay Miller goal with 1:16 remaining in the quarter. Johns Hopkins' Johnathan Peshko halted the Blue Hen's scoring spree with a goal at the 12:27 mark in the second quarter. Much different than the first quarter, the second quarter saw both teams trade goals back and forth with the home team taking the 7-4 advantage. By the half, both Kurtz (3) and Robinson (2) had multiple goals to lead the offensive charge, while Paul Reidy collected eight saves in the cage. Much like the first quarter, the third quarter saw three goals on the scoreboard. The first-two went to Johns Hopkins, before Robinson scored left eight seconds remaining in the quarter. It took Jason Seiter 15 seconds to score his third goal of the season and the ninth for Delaware on the day after a face-off in the fourth quarter. The first tie of the game came with 5:50 left in the fourth quarter when Johns Hopkins' Garrett Degnon tied it at 9-All. Thirteen seconds later, Robinson chipped one in off an assist from Joe Speers. The visitors would not go away that easy, as Degnon added another goal for the Blue Jays with 3:58 left in the game to tie it up once again, this time at 10-10. Delaware fans were loud and on their feet when Robinson scored his fourth goal of the game to give the home crowd something to cheer about with three minutes to go. With 2:07 remaining, George Ward from three yards out found an opening to give Delaware a 12-10 advantage in front of a boisterous crowd. Owen Grant caused a Johns Hopkins' turnover, his second of the night, with 1:16 to go, which proved to be a costly error for the visitors late in the game as the Blue Hens' defenders were all over the Blue Jays. The Blue Hens moved the ball and ran the clock out as they earned the first win over a ranked opponent this season to remain perfect at home. Speers came off the side line to lead all players with six ground balls and one caused turnover, while Kevin Lynch entered tonight's starting lineup and finished with four groundballs. Reidy had a career-high 12 saves along with two ground balls in the victory. Degnon led Johns Hopkins with four goals and one assist, while Joey Epstein tallied one goal and three assists. Goalkeeper Josh Kirson recorded 13 saves in the loss. Delaware will travel up I-95 to play at Villanova on Saturday, March 26. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
