The Boston University men's lacrosse team erased a three-goal deficit in the third quarter and held Bucknell scoreless over the final 16:46 of the contest en route to a 13-9 victory on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field. BU (6-2, 1-1 PL) trailed Bucknell (2-6, 1-2 PL), 8-5, with 10:17 to play in the third quarter, but the Terriers scored eight of the final nine goals of the game to earn their first regular-season victory over Bucknell since 2015. Sophomore Chris Gray became the program's all-time assist leader thanks to his four helpers. He passed Cal Dearth ('17), who had recorded 70 assists in his four-year career. Gray now has 71 assists through only 25 games. He not only scored two goals on Saturday to finish the day with six points, but he also caused two turnovers and picked up a pair of ground balls in a complete effort. Senior James Burr notched four goals while classmate Brendan Homire matched his career high with a hat trick. Senior Michael Laviano scored the game-winning goal with 2.4 seconds remaining in the third quarter and also had an assist for a two-point afternoon. Redshirt junior Josh Williamson scored his first goal as a Terrier while sophomore Michael Doxie and freshman Jake Cates each tallied one goal apiece. Senior Thomas Schmidt and junior Jared Nugent each secured one assist as well. Sophomore Sean Christman was outstanding at the faceoff X. He matched his career high by winning 19 of the 26 draws he took in addition to gathering eight of the Terriers' 38 ground balls. Defensively. the Terriers caused 13 of the Bison's 20 turnovers. Junior Nicholas Ellerton led the squad with three caused turnovers in addition to his three ground balls. Senior Quintin Germain caused two turnovers and added three ground balls while freshman Will Carson forced a giveaway and recorded two ground balls. Junior Reece Eddy secured six ground balls and had two caused turnovers; he was one of 16 Terriers to have at least one ground ball and one of eight BU players to record one caused turnover. Junior Joe McSorley made 11 saves, including four in a perfect fourth quarter. He also helped the Terriers' man-down unit go 6-for-6 against Bucknell. HOW IT HAPPENED Bucknell opened the scoring at 8:56 of the first quarter and extended the lead to 2-0 at 6:35. Doxie got BU on the board 16 seconds later when he converted a Gray feed for his second goal of the season. Cates tied the game with 1:52 to play in the stanza, but Ryan Durkin regained the lead for Bucknell with 29 seconds on the clock. That lead was short-lived, as Homire found the back of the net with 12 seconds to go to make it 3-3 after 15 minutes. Bucknell tallied the only two goals of the second stanza to take a 5-3 lead into the break. Burr scored on the Terriers' first possession of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 5-4, but a pair of Bison goals in a span of nine seconds made it 7-4 at 12:53 of the frame. Gray and Tommy Sopko traded goals before BU went on a three-goal run to tie the game at 8-8. Homire and Burr began that stretch with two goals in a span of 28 seconds. Williamson then tied the game with a coast-to-coast run. After a McSorley save, Williamson ran unopposed into the Bucknell box before side-stepping a defender and ripping home his first goal of the year. The Bison took a 9-8 lead with 1:46 to go in the third quarter. An incredible individual effort by Gray tied the game, 9-9, just 31 seconds later. He knocked down a Bucknell pass at midfield, picked up the ground ball and ran into the box before dodging a defender and firing home his 19th goal of the season. Laviano gave the Terriers' their first lead of the game with 2.4 seconds to play in the stanza when he circled around the cage and beat Klipstein for his second strike of the campaign. The senior captain then assisted on Burr's goal at 11:59 of the fourth quarter to give BU an 11-9 lead. BU added a pair of man-down goals to seal the victory late in the frame, beginning with a Homire strike at 2:14. Schmidt helped cause a turnover during a Bison EMO and eventually got the ball back from McSorley. He then fired a perfect pass from behind his own net to Homire in the Bucknell box. The senior stepped past goalkeeper Christian Klipstein (12 saves) and scored into the open cage for his ninth goal of the season. Gray and Burr then combined for the final goal of the game with 1:48 remaining in regulation. GAME NOTES Burr extended his goal scoring streak to 25 games. He is now second on the all-time points leaderboard at BU with 155 points, just 15 shy of Jack Wilson's record of 170. Burr has tallied 121 goals and 33 assists in his outstanding career. Gray has notched at least five points in each of the last seven games. He now has 50 points thanks to 19 goals and a team-high 31 assists. Gray is the first Terrier to ever record two 50-point seasons. Homire's last hat trick came in a 10-8 victory at Canisius on March 5, 2016. McSorley now boasts a .560 save percentage as well as a 9.45 goals-against average. NEXT UP: HARVARD The Terriers will continue their three-game homestand on Tuesday when they welcome Harvard to Nickerson Field for their final non-conference game of the regular season.
